Since this is Memorial Day weekend, I thought it would be nice to have a leisurely time contemplating what Memorial day means. The day has been set aside to remember those who gave their lives so that we can enjoy the freedom that is an integral part of ours.
We are going to keep the brunch simple today in keeping with the spirit of the weekend. One of our freedoms is to choose food that will taste great but not be the best for us. We are being catered by the Magnolia Pancake Haus in San Antonio, TX. Our guest is the late Marvin Gaye.

So let’s go.
We have newborn deer in Lakeway, so there are reminders out to slow down.
A shot of some of the flags lining the major streets. The city has lines all the public roads with flags.
A peaceful waterfall to think about those who are gone.
A larger waterfall that reminds us of freedom’s price.
More of the flags honoring those who gave their lives.
Another shot of the flags. There are so many miles of flags that it is impossible to show them all.
The Spirit of Freedom has flags as well.
The flags are at half staff in remembrance of those murdered in San Jose.
Flag-lined walkway.
A reminder of what Memorial Day really means.
A private display of gratitude.
I hope you will all keep the spirit of Memorial Day alive. Here is Marvin Gaye singing the National Anthem.
A salute to all those who laid their lives for us. Lest we forget !

“Freedom is not free” captures the day, doesn’t it. Thank you, John, for the photos, National Anthem, and remembrance. We all need to pause more and give thanks. 💜

I think so too, Gwen. When you think of all the lives cut short showing gratitude is the least anyone can do. 🌹

Thanks John. After that bacon & cheddar omelette, a contemplative walk was just what I needed. Time to reflect on what we have and what the cost was.

I’ve often been thinking of putting signs out to make drivers slow down because there are fawns about, but I think it’s useless. They come down the hill from outside the city limits and are sometimes still going 50 when they pass our property, instead of the legal 30. And likewise they speed up way before they leave the city limits. Sometimes the local police catch one, but way too rarely. I wish we had speed traps here like in Germany.
Have a great Sunday, John,
Pit

I think at least the signs would give them a warning that there are deer in the area.

True, but would they heed the warnings? I doubt it.

Nice to see that people across the country have not forgotten what this weekend is all about. I wondered after the comments from our Pres and VP: “Have a nice weekend.”
My gratitude to all who ever served.

Our Pres and VP are tone deaf on their own. Their handlers got out a quick Tweet that was more appropriate. Notice no criticism from the media.

“Never forget” seems an appropriate thought for Memorial Day. And Lakeway has certainly brought out a LOT of Flags! I can’t help grinning over the baby fawn sign though — wonder what Monkey would think if he saw a baby deer?!?

He would probably think it an excellent playmate

The National Anthem never fails to deliver goose bumps and often reduces me to tears. One of a handful of songs that can do that time and again.
Beautiful post, John.
And I’ll have the spinach and mushroom omelette, thank you! 🙂

A great post, John. It is fascinating to watch all the patriotism and support of the army you have in the USA. We barely have an army at all and there is very little patriotism here.

Thank you for this poignant tour, John. In 1969 I was dating a boy … Nick Gonzales. We figured to get married when he returned from Vietnam. Only trouble was … he didn’t return. I quietly honour those who gave their lives in service to this country. I don’t display flags or shoot off fireworks, but in my own way I thank them all for making the ultimate sacrifice. Oh, and I’ll keep it simple with the bacon & cheddar omelet, por favor!
