Thursday – A Little Personal – Twiggy and Lucy Fight the Heat

“I don’t know, Twiggy. Looks pretty hot.”

“Hey, Dad. What’s the temperature.”

“Um, let’s see. Right now, it is 95 degrees Fahrenheit which is 35 degrees Celcius. You want a feels like temperature on that?”

“Thanks, Dad. I think 95 feels hot enough.”

“Tell you what, Little one. I’m not going to making any sudden moves.”

“What does he mean when he says “feels like?”

“That is a relative temperature taking into account wind and humidity.”

“So what is the feels like temperature right now?”

“Well, the phone says it feels like 106 degrees Fahrenheit, which is 41.1 degrees Celcius.”

“Before I ask where you got a phone, I need to rest.”

“I happen to look at the boss’s phone for the weather.”

“Oh well, that explains it. Why are you laying in the sun?”

“It feels good on my bones.”

“But aren’t you burning up?”

“No. I’m not moving, so it is like being in a dry sauna.”

“I see. Wait. What is a sauna?”

“A place that has hot rocks, and you sit in there and sweat.”

“Sounds like something crazy humans would do. Resting is better.”

  1. I’m with Twiggy on the sauna thing. Never been a fan of sweating. I think people should pay more attention to the ‘feels like’ temp too. Tired of being told that it isn’t that bad by someone who is standing in air conditioning and looking at the weather channel.

  2. Hot temps everywhere, John. My friend in Phoenix is baking at 118 and we are reveling in 90+ degrees “air you can wear” here in Florida. I think the girls may need one of those misters on the porch to keep them cool and refreshed. 😉

  3. Apparently, we’re maybe getting some hot weather from early July for a couple of weeks, lols. I love Lori’s comment “air you can wear”. I’ve not heard that before, but it sounds so perfect. Keep cool, you guys. 🙂

      1. the British version of that, given to me by my mum was ‘horses sweat, gentlemen perspire but ladies gently glow’. Not having reached gentleman status my equine blood means I sweat, sadly…

  4. Clearly, Twiggy and Lucy aren’t one bit mad — Noel Coward wasn’t writing about them when he penned his lyrics:

    Mad dogs and Englishmen
Go out in the midday sun,
    The Japanese don’t care to.
    The Chinese wouldn’t dare to,
Hindoos and Argentines sleep firmly from twelve to one.
    But Englishmen detest a siesta.
    In the Philippines
    There are lovely screens
To protect you from the glare.
    In the Malay States
    There are hats like plates
    Which the Britishers won’t wear.
    At twelve noon
    The natives swoon
And no further work is done.
    But mad dogs and Englishmen
Go out in the midday sun.

  5. I think they both have the right idea. On a day that hot it definitely sounds like it should be a nothing day. Nothing to do, nothing to think, nothing to worry about.

  6. Ha-ha-ha! They are amazing! As always Lucy & Twiggy are two faces of time: the age likes the sun, while the youth is yet in the shade. Might heat not last long, dear John, for you not to turn into kebab from hot sausages! 🙂 🙂 🙂

  7. Hot is hot no matter how you slice it. I like the phone ‘face’, or whatever they’re called. Is that the iWatch? I need that ‘face’ so I can check the Dow constantly. By the way, im working on another ‘Frog, Hog, Dog’ story about the heat. Your little guys can critique it. Of course, by the time I draw the pictures, it’ll be winter. Drawing is hard, but fun.

      1. They’re great watches. Charging us the only downside. Yes, that frog, hog and dog are occupying my mind too much. I lay in bed thinking up story lines for them. Yikes!

  8. Wow, that is hot temps, John. No wonder the girls are moving so slowly.
Meanwhile, in PA, we’re having flashbacks to April weather and it’s almost July. ARRRGH!
    Stay cool down there!

  9. I used to love to lie in the sun. Now I use a heating pad for all the sore spots while having a fan blow directly on me. I guess that’s the difference between youth and age.

Give the girls belly rubs for men when they come in from the heat.

  10. Twiggy is showing good sense (maybe for once?) Lucy should listen! I hate seeing people out jogging with their dogs on hot days – a friend killed his dog that way…

  11. Sunrise and sunset keep me going during this hot spell — both so beautiful and both cooler than the day. I loved the dialogue, John. And the very thought of a sauna brings a moan from me. 🙂

      1. I found that dry heat, even if it felt like being in an oven, better tolerable thnn the much lower temps in Fredericksburg when there’s much humidity.

  12. Out of the mouth of dogs – yes, who would PAY to sit on hot rocks and sweat? Lots of people I guess, but not me. That’s a hot Texan day, but I must say, it’s worse in the Northeast when it reaches 85 and above because we get high high humidity with it. Ughhhhhh.

        1. Hard to live anywhere else after Southern Marin! We lived in Tiburon for 20 years. :-0 We hoped to move to Sonoma next but that didn’t work out. You and I are kindred location spirits!

  13. Humans are the only ones who use saunas. As far as crazy goes – we’re ALL crazy – especially since we lock up the sane for safe-keeping. They sure couldn’t handle it out here with the rest of us!!

  14. I’m with Twiggy on saunas. I can never breathe in them. Heat and humidity…ohhh, no. Much ❤ to you and your girls, John. Xxx

  15. I think the Finnish approach to saunas are the weirdest; it’s a ball-dropping minus 20 outside so they built up a hot sweat and having done the hard work go leap in a lake that’s cold enough to change your gender in milliseconds. London is basking in 25C and that’s plenty hot enough. Still, Wimbledon starts Monday so it’s bound to rain.

  16. “Sounds like something crazy humans would do.” Ah, ha, ha! Twiggy’s so right! Who needs a dry sauna when you’ve got the weather? Actually, it’s been unusually cool here in south Florida with temps in the upper 70s and lower 80s. A temperature of 95º F is scorching hot. Phew! Stay cool my friend. 🙂

  17. I was never a sauna girl so I’m totes with Twigs. And, someone best keep an eye on Lucy to make sure she doesn’t get a sunburn while she warms her bones!
Our heat is very humid here so that god we don’t often hit the feels like 100+
Love Lori’s “Air you can wear”!

  18. I remember summer in Texas, John, but not terribly fondly, ha! It’s been hot enough here, thank you very much. The nineties with high humidity is about all I can take. Get those girls inside on a cool A/C vent!

  19. Ahh, Twiggy and Lucy are poetic in their own right.
They show us the meaning of “Dog Days”.
    OR perhaps “Dog Daze”!
