“Did you see that?”
“I almost missed it. What was that anyway.”
“Looked like a raccoon without any clothes.”
“You sure there is such a thing.”
“No, but that’s what it looked like.”
“It is fast.”
“I’ll say. Might be fun to race it.”
“You can,, for sure. You’re built for running. I’m a little too close to the road.”
“Aw, come on. I’ve seen you put on a burst of speed.”
“Yeah, for maybe ten seconds. That sucker is still running.”
“Wonder where he’s headed.”
“Don’t know, but he looks like he might be late for dinner.”
“You don’t think he lives with someone who feeds him, do you?”
“All I can say is his posture right now is the way I would act at the sound of the falling kibble.”
“You hear that?”
“What?”
“I thought I heard the subtle sound of the kibble bag being opened.”
“I don’t hear it.”
“You are too near the Earth. Sounds go right over your head. Listen.”
“It the thundering paws of that thing. it’s coming back.”
“You’re right. Maybe we can stop it.”
“Not me. Participating in a stampede is not my idea of fun. So you go right ahead.”
“I’ll just yell at it.”
“That will work.”
“HEY, YOU.”
“WHO ME?”
“YEAH, YOU. WHAT”S THE HURRY?”
“GOT ERRANDS TO RUN.”
“WHAT ARE YOU ANYWAY?”
“OPOSSUM. SEE YA.”
“What the heck?”
“I know, right. I thought those things were out in the wild.”
“Looks like they are migrating to our neighborhood.”
“We better be careful. I hear they carry rabies.”
“I heard that too. That’s it. No racing it for me.”
“Did you say something about kibble before?”
“Wishing won’t make it happen.”
“Let’s go sit on the porch with sad eyes. Maybe that will make it happen.”
“Great idea. You know for a short one you are pretty sharp.”
“Since when is short stupid?”
“You know what I mean. Some of my best friends are short.”
“Yeah, okay.”

Poor opossums. Rabies is actually extremely rare in them. Wonder why people think otherwise since they’re the ‘go to’ rabies carrier for many.

The girls are on form today John. That’s the strangest looking opossum I ever did see , though I’ve never seen one but obviously this one is beautiful. More like a greyhound or whippet than a large rat though.

Not a big fan of possum, but your story is excellent, John. I can almost hear these two carrying on such a conversation. And you’ve got to love the expression on their faces!
