Wake Up by John W. Howell © 2023
“Sir. Wake up. Open your eyes.”
“Huh. W-who are you?”
“Someone who saw you fall.”
“That light is so unusual.”
“You took a bad fall. Do you remember it?”
“The last thing I remember is looking out over the ocean.”
“Well that rock you were standing on let go.”
“I fell all the way to the water?”
“Not quite. You landed on this outcrop of stone.”
“Why can’t I see anything but the light?”
“Don’t worry. You will in a few moments.”
“How did you reach me here?”
“Truth? I had to jump here from where you fell.”
“So we both are stranded?”
“Not exactly stranded. We’ll be okay.”
“I’m beginning to see more the light is fading.”
“See I told you that would happen.”
“How far are we from the water?”
“Looks like about a thousand feet to me.”
“That cliff was two thousand feet above the water. That means I fell a thousand feet?”
“Your math is pretty good.”
“Wait. Why am I still alive after falling that far? I see you now and you are dressed like a hippy.”
“Some would say a shepherd.”
“What? Did you say shepherd?”
“I did.”
“So that fall . . .”
“Means you have no more worries. It’ time for us to leave.”

Well handled and succinct tale in brief! Thank you! Cheers. x

A lovely ending to be met by the Good Shepherd and not that other guy.

Yes the other guy would have been a much nastier engagement. 😁

That picture is really something, John. It is so entrancing to me that it kept me from going on to your post for quite a while. I think your story is a perfect fit for that picture. It sure seems like what someone would see in their heart after falling 1000 feet onto a rock ledge. ✨💥✌

In a transitional moment like that, I myself believe it is way better to be greeted by a hippie and a bright light, John!

[…] John Howell commented on my post yesterday. He suggested that I probably had fun using my snowblower to move all the snow around. I wanted to reply “I love it when a plan comes together” and I wanted to attribute it to George Peppard’s character in The A-Team. The problem was, I didn’t remember the character’s nickname (it was Hannabal). So, I searched: […]
