The coffee machine is taking its sweet time producing the brew I need. Desire is like a pore that gets bigger. When the cup finally arrives, the tendency is to pour it directly down the throat. My poor body is screaming, but a sip will have to suffice. Once done, my attention turns to the clock. It is set for August 3rd, 1924. The destination is Lyon, France, and the duration is an hour. The plunger is pulled.
We find ourselves in Lyon, the site of the 1924 Grand Prix of France.
Giuseppe Campari of Italy won the French Grand Prix, driving an Alfa Romeo P2 and finishing first among 22 drivers, more than one minute ahead of Albert Divo of France. The race took place over 35 laps for a total distance of 810.09 km.

We now know that Giuseppe competed in auto races until 1933. He was also a professional opera singer. Sadly, he was 41 years old when he was killed in a crash in 1933.
Just as the champaign corks start flying, our alarm goes off, and we land safely on the trusty couch. Linda’s text is waiting. It reads.

No you have it right just the wrong brand. El Camino is the Chevy brand but they are almost identical.

My father in law used to have one of those truck cars. I’m sure his was a Ford. Might have been called a Ranchero??? I’m reminded of a couple of songs today. Pour Me by Trick Pony, and One Piece at a Time by Johnny Cash.

810.09 km? That seems like a long way for a Grand Prix race in 1924 to me. It will probably be tight with three in the cab of that Caballero, but legal.

Those classic cars do have so much more oomph than today’s models… even if the suspension was a bit iffy… terrific hugsx

When I was a youth, I had a modified 1949 Ford club coupe. It was a V8 and with additional power upgrades to the engine, the suspension needed to be beefed up otherwise the car was not safe. This was in 1957 and the suspension was a very important consideration. The factory cars did have more power but you are right, the suspension was the last thing considered. I currently have a newer coupe with a full factory installed racing under carriage. It handles like a Grand Prix racer.

TMI, indeed, John. I’d just leave him in the back if it came to that. Sad that Giuseppe died at such a young age. Racing has always been dangerous and attractive at the same time.

This is my annual trip to Pittsburgh. We’ve never had to wait for a room here, but a lot of people are in town for the Pirates (including us).

Those cars… I was driving to Prattsville to hang out with Marc, and I swear, there must have been some kind of convention for owners of that style of car. I had never noticed them before and all of a sudden, I crossed path with dozens!
