Today, I opened Circumstances of Childhood randomly to page 115. Without looking, I pointed at the page, and my finger fell closest to the word “position.”
Position by John W. Howell © 2024
“So, what position do you play?”
“I pretty much play them all.”
“You’re kidding.”
“No, I figured if I was going to do well, I would have to learn them all.”
“But that is almost impossible.”
“I’ve heard that before.”
“What did the coach say.”
“When I tried out, you mean?”
“Yeah.”
“The same thing as you, impossible.”
“So what happened?”
“He had some guys run me through the positions.”
“And?”
“I start tomorrow.”
“Wow, that’s great.”
“Except for one thing.”
“I’m starting to molt.”
“You can still play.”
“If I can’t fly, I can’t play.”
“Who said that?”
“Haven’t you ever heard of a high fly ball?”
“Oh, brother.”

Just the twist I need to start my day. I always like to stay alert to the possible.
Good story, John. I hope you also have a good day.

Just like in any job, if you are Jack of all Trades, you get abused! Might be best to lay low…
You’re so much fun!

Whether to be able to fill in any position or be a specialist is definitely worthy of discussion.

As a longtime sports fan, I’ve got a good trivia fact for you. The A’s (Bert Campaneris) and the Twins (Cesar Tovar) once each played all nine positions in a single game, switching to a new position each inning.

That must have been fun to watch. Thanks, Pete.

Your story riddles are great fun! Opposite of the hedgehog theory. Both approaches have their place, I suppose.

The fox and hedgehog approach can work. Of course knowing one big thing can be an advantage. Thanks, Michele.
