How cool is this? My coffee was waiting for me when merely approaching the machine. How that happened is anybody’s guess, but it seemed like a nice thing to have happened. After the first sip, the time travel clock came to mind. The time is set to November 30th, 1924. The place is Cleveland Ohio and the duration is for an hour. The plunger is pulled, and we find ourselves at the headquarters of the National Football League. We are hear for the announcement of the 1924 champions.
The 1924 NFL season officially ended with the Cleveland Bulldogs as champions based on having the best record (7-1-1) for a .875 winning percentage. Second place went to the Chicago Bears (6-1-4 or .857), whom Cleveland had defeated, 16 to 14, in the Bulldogs’ first game on October 5.
The league was founded in 192o. Joseph Carr, the commissioner, announces the standings.

“That was a cool trip.”
“It was fun to see all the teams that were in the NFL at the time.”
“So the league was only four years old in 1924.”
“Yup. Organizers tried to get one together before 1920 but were unsuccessful.”
“Makes you wonder the keys to success.”
“I think the owners all decided it would be good for their pocketbook. They weren’t wrong.”
“So the season was over by November 30th?”
“Yes. Can you imagine that today?”
“No. Think of the revenue lost without a Super Bowl and playoffs.”
“I’m glad we still have those to look forward to. Speaking of looking forward.”
“Yeah, I know. You have VooDoo Ranger on the mind.”
“How did you guess?”
“Just lucky, I suppose. Uber?”
“Over there.”

“Who’s junk are they talking about?”
“What?”
“The truck says junk removal.”
“Oh. I think that’s a service they provide.”
“Lucky there is room in the cab.”
“Yes, plenty of room there. Also, the price is right. We do have to make one stop, though.”
“One stop? Where?”
“The guy needs to move some stuff into a house.”
“That could take hours.”
“No, ’cause we are going to help him.”
“Well, this is another nice kettle of fish you’ve pickled me in.”

It’s fun to me to look back 100 years, thanks, John! [but that truck has got to go!]

And only two of those teams remain. At least with the same name. Set up looks horrible though. They didn’t all play the same amount of games.

I don’t think they did.

I had to watch the video. I loved Laurel and Hardy. And the phrase brings your story to an end perfectly.

I loved them too. I could watch their old two reelers over and over.

Too bad the Buffalo Bisons changed their name — that’s a fun name 🙂

It’s real interesting, seeing those NFL standings from 100 years ago, more teams and different names. No Detroit team. Helping the truck driver move the truckload will work up your thirst.

Yes no Detroit team. The Detroit Lions became a professional football team in 1929 when they were founded in Portsmouth, Ohio as the Portsmouth Spartans. The team joined the NFL on July 12, 1930. In 1934, the team was sold and moved to Detroit, where they were renamed the Detroit Lions.

Since it was 6 years before the Steelers existed, I guess I can’t complain about Cleveland winning. Still…
Great job, John. I hope you’re relaxing, but working off some of that pie.

Yeah, relaxing is in the cards. We had a chocolate Flan so no pie.

John,
What a great find. Do you do all your own research or does your lovely assistant help you?
Being born in Cleveland a few years later, this was a great post.
Thanks

Yes, I do all my own research. I’m sure you Cleveland types love the Browns. Thanks for the comment. Nice to see you made it across the mote and over the concertina wire.

My brother and I had a ‘discussion’ about the start of the league over Thanksgiving dinner in conjunction with the origins of the Lions & Cowboys Thanksgiving Day home appearances. He had no idea Detroit’s Thanksgiving Day appearances have been going for 90 years and wouldn’t believe it. No pie for him! LOL

Yes keep the pie away from him. As a Detroit born and raised I can vouch for the Lions playing every Thanksgiving Day for 73 of those 90. (I became aware of the Lions when I was ten years old.)

Yup, they’ve been doing it since 1934! George Richards made a smart decision to try to woo the fans to come watch the team.

Funny story, John! Not sure I’d want the Uber ride because of the work involved – oh my back! Interesting that the Bears and the Green Bay Packers remain as named teams!
You will need some Voodoo Rangers after the ride!

I will need a few after the ride. Thanks, Noelle.

The teams sure were named differently then weren’t they. Like Dan ^ He-Man can’t be mad about the Cleveland win. He and cousin in Cleveland have been team rivals all their lives. They’re good friends so it’s all in good fun.
Maybe they’ll leave the couch in the truck and you can nap on the way to the pub. 😊

Cleveland Bulldogs the champions, that is a stark contrast to Cleveland Browns. I guess Cleveland was on top of the world back then.

This is unrelated, but I heard the comment today, and after I stopped laughing I remembered your days on the coast and thought you’d enjoy it to. A fellow said, “Yup. The snowbirds are beginning to show up now. Every year it’s the same. They come with one tee shirt and one $20 bill, and they never change either one.”
LOL — only a coastie would understand!

I love that the Bears, Packers and Cardinals have been around forever. And two of them are now in the same division. I mean, they existed back when there were teams called the Maroons, the Legion, the Triangles and my personal favorite, the Jeffersons.
It’s interesting to see how professional football used to be a lot like college football (Before the CFP) in that the champions were chosen off the field.
Classic video, LOL
