Fairbanks Airport Police and Fire Department
Today’s good news comes from The News Tribune in Tacoma, Washington.
A bald eagle was found ‘frozen’ and unable to fly. See the rescue with the ‘best ending ever.’
First responders in Alaska had an unusual overnight guest: a juvenile bald eagle needing help.
A good Samaritan came across the “quite frozen” eagle that couldn’t fly on the evening of Jan. 11 and waved over a Fairbanks International Airport police officer, the Fairbanks Airport Police and Fire Department wrote in a Facebook post.
According to the post, after checking with the Alaska Raptor Center, first responders put the eagle in a patrol car to keep it out of the cold.
The eagle spent the night munching on fatty steak and salmon and “resting peacefully in a dark, quiet corner of the station,” officials said.
Officials said the eagle was assessed with help from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services, and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, and it was determined to be in great shape.
The Fairbanks Airport Police and Fire Department said in a follow-up Facebook post on Jan. 12 that the bird was released back into the wild, declaring it “the best ending ever.”
Here is that post, which you need to log into Facebook to view. https://www.facebook.com/fairbanksairportpoliceandfire/videos/2081709672272277
The post included a video.
“Oh yeah, he soars,” someone said as the eagle fled.
Another person said, “He’s super strong. That’s wonderful.”
In the follow-up Facebook post, officials thanked “everyone who showed concern, especially the Good Samaritan who called in the frozen bird and helped (rescue) it. We wish every day could be as exciting as this one was!”
The good news in this story is that someone cared enough to report a bird in distress, and as a result, it was saved. Today’s JohnKu talks about involvement. I hope you have a great weekend.

Why they jumped into action. . .
Involvement is key.

Wonderful news, John! I appreciate how everyone here is helping together to give quick help. Best wishes, Michael

I would think Alaska has a few operations that are different than ours.

Yes. They need each other to survive in some places. I see in upstate NY, 1st responders saved a moose that feel into a lake thru thin ice.

Fantastic involvement all around, and I like that the official called the day exciting. Must’ve been quite a difference to have an eagle at the police station!

I love stories like this! My daughter volunteers for Wildlife Rescue on her island off the coast of BC. She once saved an injured baby eagle. They are powerful birds even as babies.

Years ago, one of our police officers helped us capture a pelican that was walking the neighborhood. It turned out to be blind in one eye, and unable to fish. In the end, it began a new life at Moody Gardens, where it’s apparently still living the pelican version of la dolce vita.

You have to wonder how he got himself in that state in the first place, but all is well that ends well.

Wonderful! Growing up, there was a woman in ‘the hood’ who was the go-to person if any of us ragtag kids found a wounded bird. She always graciously accepted them. It’s nice to see birds, or any animal, rescued.

Sorry I’m late with a response to my favorite Friday posts. Thank you so much for sharing. I got goosebumps when I watched the video of that eagle soaring upon release. Yay for another feel good story in a world where too often we are bombarded with ugly elements far too often.
