Sunday – Fifty Two Views of the Gulf

Here is the regular view this week. Of course, I have to make accommodations since the walkover has not moved. The next few photos will show you where the walkover stands as of Friday.

Here is the beginning of the walkover. The Gulf is straight ahead.

The first turn is ahead.

You can now see the Gulf.

A little closer now. You can see that the walkway takes a turn to the left up ahead.

Here is a bench where you can take a rest and look over the beach.

Here is a look at that left turn. You can see the walkway ends on the sand. This part is not finished as yet.

I am standing on the walk way in the approximate position of all the other photos. Those dark lines in the sand are car and truck tracks. Beautiful day in the mid 70’s, light winds. Yes, that thing in the air to the left that looks like a drawing of a gull is a gull

Last week’s photo.

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt “Food”

Saturday Stream of Consciousness time again. This week’s prompt is “Food” which can be used as the theme of this post. If you would like to know more and join this fun go to Linda Hill’s site http://lindaghill.com/2016/02/26/the-friday-reminder-and-prompt-for-socs-feb-2716/  Here is my interpretation.

Food by John W. Howell © 2106

“So today class we are going to talk about food. Yes, Johnny.”

“Will this be on a test?”

“Well Johnny, I hate to tell you this, but the only way I can be sure you understand the lesson is to give you a test. So yes. There will be a test. Try to stay up with the class.”

“Most of the class sleeps during the lectures so I don’t think it will be too hard to stay up with them.”

“Very funny Johnny. Have you ever thought about being a writer?”

“No ma’am. I want to be able to make a living.”

“Okay, Johnny may I proceed?”

“Yes ma’am sorry about the interruption.”

“Now class in this segment we are going to learn how the body converts food to energy. Sigh, yes, Johnny.”

“Are you talking energy like oil and gas.”

“Well in the body food changes to elements that act like gas in a car.”

“Wow. We talking Methane?”

“Let’s not go there, Johnny. By the way do you need to visit the restroom?”

“No ma’am. Why do you ask?”

“Oh no reason I just would like to move on is all.”

“Oh, I get it. You would like me to be quiet.”

“I didn’t say that Johnny. May I proceed now?”

“Yes, ma’am. I’m sorry.”

“We will also learn the correct kinds of food to eat to maximize your body’s performance. What? John.”

“By performance are you talking running and that kind of stuff?”

“Yes, Johnny. That is exactly what I’m talking about. Thanks for clarifying that for us.”

“My dad eats wheat germ to help him sleep.”

“I’m not sure how wheat germ helps him sleep.”

“Me neither. He just says it helps his performance in the bedroom.”

“Fine Johnny. Let’s start the lesson shall we?”

“Yes, ma’am. Sorry for the interruption.”

“Now class who can tell me the most important meal of the day?”

“Yes, Charles.”

“Pizza.”

“Um. Anyone else want to try? Yes, Mary Lou.”

“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.”

“Very good Mary Lo— Yes, Johnny what is it?”

“I think Charles is right. Pizza is the most important meal of the day. Especially if you don’t have any.”

“Okay, I give up. Here’s what we are going to do. I’m going to sit down in Johnny’s chair, and Johnny will teach the course. Come up here Johnny.”

“Thank you, teacher. Now class who can tell me the four major food groups.

“Yes, Simon.”

“Grilled cheese, bacon, pizza, and chocolate milk.”

“Correct. We need to add Ice cream and Snicker bars, but I think you have it. What’s the matter, Mrs. Crane? You crying?”

Friday JohnKu – AKA – Hump Day

Another week has gone by. I don’t know about you, but these puppies are really going fast. It seems like yesterday that I was putting together last week’s JohnKu. I think it is because I’m busy as hell.

I have received some feedback from my Beta readers and I must say they have been pretty uniform in pointing out some need for additional attention to elements of my next John Cannon story. The title is Our Justice and will be the last in the trilogy. I will need to get busy and start before all the feedback is all in since I have promised my editor something by April. (Lucky I didn’t give a date)

I will be promoting His Revenge Kindle version for $0.99 starting on March 3rd through March 6th.

Today’s JohnKu talks about being busy. I hope you enjoy it.

Thursday – A Little Personal – His Revenge Sale Coming Soon #RRBC #ASMSG

Normally I don’t do a lot of promotion of my books here on Fiction Favorites. Yes, the sidebar contains everything anyone needs to know about the content and sales links to His Revenge and My GRL. Now and then it is necessary to interrupt regular programming with a commercial message.

Today I’m giving all you buyers who are heading over to your favorite e-book outlet to buy His Revenge permission to STAND DOWN.

DO NOT BUY HIS REVENGE TODAY. You see I’m running a $0.99 cent sale on His Revenge Kindle edition beginning on March 3rd until March 6th including an Ereader News Today feature. Yes, that is $0.99 US and €0.99 in the UK. I’ll provide more detail, but for now, HOLD OFF BUYING HIS REVENGE until March 3rd (and then buy all you want after all it is only $0.0000107 per word)

If you are not familiar with His Revenge leave the reader and look to the right

We will return you to your regular programming tomorrow. Thank You.

Wednesday Story Day – AKA – Hump Day

Wednesday Story Day again. Last week we left Ben and Doctor Wente while they were discussing Ben’s situation. The doctor told Ben that he would have to report that Ben shot himself with his own gun. Ben in confessing that the gun was at home told the doctor there is more to the story. Let’s join the two and see what Ben what was on Ben’s mind.
“More? What do you mean more?”
“I bought it from a guy on the street after running an ad on Craig’s list.”
“You’re kidding right?”
“No. I ran the ad, and I met this guy in the park, and he sold me the gun.”
“So you have no idea where he got it?”
“See this is the problem with telling the police I shot myself with my own gun. What if this gun was used in another crime?”
“I really can’t help you, Ben. I will not lie in my report.”
“I understand. just having an unlicensed gun is against the law so I might as well face the music.”
“That is a very mature attitude, Ben. There your foot is all cleaned up. Let’s get you to X-ray and see what damage you’ve don to yourself.”
“Yeah thanks, doc. I would like to tell you something but need to know if there is anything like doctor-patient confidentiality.”
“Only as far as your heath and treatment Ben. Information outside your condition is not covered.”
“I thought so. Do you have a priest or minister in the hospital?”
“I know I can call the local parish, and one will come over.”
“Could you please call. I need to have a confessional.”
“Ben, you know your wound is not life-threatening don’t you?”
“I know that about the wound doc. I’m not sure about the after effects, though.”
“I don’t understand but will call for a priest. You rest now. The X-ray tech will be right in.”
“Thanks, doc. Also please don’t let Mrs. Worthe in until the priest gets here.”
“Strange request Ben, but okay.”
“Thanks.”

Tuesday – Anything Possible – Kreative Kue #65 by Keith Channing

Keith Channing puts out writing prompts in the form of photos. Here is what he says, “Using this photo as inspiration, write a short story, flash fiction, scene, poem; anything, really; and either put it (or a link to it) in a comment or email it to me at keithkreates@channing.fr before 6pm on Sunday (if you aren’t sure what the time is where I live, this link will tell you). If you post it on your own blog or site, a link to this page would be appreciated, but please do also mention it in a comment here – pingbacks don’t seem to be working, and I haven’t yet figured out why.

Go on. You know you want to. Let your creativity and imagination soar. I shall display the entries, with links to your own blog or website, next Monday.”

Here is the photo

My interpretation

Have One by John W. Howell ©2016

“How about you sir? Would you like one?”

“Um. I don’t know really. What d’ya say they were made of?”

“I didn’t say. These are the best there is on the planet.”

“Okay, I’ll bite. The best what on the planet?”

“Here little boy. You want one?”

“I have to wait for my dad. He said not to take anything from strangers.”

“I think that’s candy kid. This situation  is different. It’s lunch.”

“I still better wait.”

“How about you over there. You want one?”

“Like the other guy, I would like to know what they are.”

“These are hamburgers. You never saw a hamburger before?”

“No. Can’t say I have. Say where did you people come from after all?”

“We are from the government and we are here to help you.”

“We don’t need any help. We are doing fine.”

“How about a hamburger then.”

“What’s it made of?”

“Beef. Good ole government beef.”

“What’s beef?”

“You’re kidding right?”

“No ma’am. I never heard of it.”

“You know what a cow is?”

“Sure I do. They are our pets.”

“Beef is cow.”

“COW? dead cow? You want us to eat cow?”

“What is the matter with you? Everyone eats cow.”

“Not here we don’t. We play fetch with them, and they provide companionship.”

“Does everyone feel that way?”

“YES.”

“Well, Blanch it looks like another government feeding program has been planned to the finite detail of perfection. We sure have a lot of hamburgers to eat.”

“I like our uniforms, though. Don’t you?”

Mark’s Writing Process – Patent Pending

By Mark Aberdeen

Writing isn’t my full-time job. In my day job I manage a bunch of engineers for a telecommunication’s company and it blocks off a good portion of my week. I also have a wife, house, three dogs, obligations and a honey-do list with a never-ending list of home repairs that need to be done. When I come up with a story idea, it can be very annoying. First, my characters don’t know how to shut up and go away. They nag me until I write it down. Let’s be clear, I’m not literally hearing voices, but there are stories that need to be told, and I’m the appointed one to tell them. It’s a responsibility I take very seriously and one I don’t take on lightly. It’s an obligation.

I know once I settle down to write, I have a difficult time stopping. My wife becomes temporarily widowed, my dogs bark at me as if I were a stranger entering our home, I stop for bathroom and coffee breaks, I’ve slept with my face in my keyboard, I’ve had to delete a thousand pages of the letter E, I emerge from my office, not unlike a groundhog on February 2nd jumping at shadows and clutching a manuscript in grubby, coffee-stained fist, desperate for a shower, human contact, vitamin D production from sunlight and new eyeglass prescription. My creative process takes no prisoners. I use the rest of the year to recover from it and convince my wife not to spend the insurance money. My process isn’t for everyone, but the point of it is a writer can’t write without doing the work. Some talk about writing, or think about writing, or contemplate writing; they have terrific ideas, but there’s no substitute for putting words to paper, or pixels to screens, or whatever the kids are doing these days. A writer writes…patent pending.

Knight and Dex

Excerpt

Snow settled over New London and covered the alley with a chilly blanket, which normally gave me a moment’s pause to reflect. I might have thought about tranquility, but there was nothing tranquil in the roundhouse kick I took to the face. Steam rose from crimson splatter as my blood hit the freshly fallen snow.

Minx’s claws flashed. I jumped back and narrowly avoided being torn open at the belly.

It was difficult to wax poetic while someone was doing their best to kill me.

Welcome to my life.

I swung my left fist. My intention wasn’t to connect with Minx’s jaw but to buy a precious second. The parry worked well enough and gave me the moment I needed to draw the pulse pistol from under my coat. I bellowed a triumphant, “Ha!”

My moment of glory was short-lived. Another kick connected with my right hand. The blow jarred the weapon loose, and it sailed into a snow bank. Powdery snow swallowed it whole. The thing about being unarmed, it felt a bit like being naked in a crowd. No way to cover my ass.

I gripped my stinging hand. “Shit.”

A powerful arm, furry and itchy and stiff as a crowbar, hooked me around the neck. Minx had gotten behind me, and the momentum of her attack tore my feet from the ground. I cartwheeled, forcing her to detach and spring back, but I landed face-down in a heap. The snow with all its apparent fluffiness did nothing to cushion my fall. The impact rattled my bones and lights danced across my vision, swirling in loopy rings.

All I needed was another concussion.

Strong hands grabbed me by the collar and belt. My stomach lurched as I was torn from the relative comfort of the ground and flipped onto my back like a flapjack. Minx pounced on top of me and pinned my arms to my sides with her powerful thighs. Normally, I approved of such positions, but she wasn’t Pink Panther, and this wasn’t foreplay. I feared she would crunch me like a walnut in a nutcracker. I gasped for precious air.

To any observer, it would appear as if I were unprepared for this fight. That observer would have been correct. I’d seen her running down the sidewalk and duck into this alley. She was up to something, and I’d interrupted her. Evidence suggested it was something she didn’t want the cops to know about. While my intent was to have a friendly chat with her, she’d decided to take our exchange in a different direction.

Minx had a reputation in underworld circles as an effective messenger. Our not-so-cozy encounter fell within the realm of her typical delivery method. While I didn’t feel like she took sadistic glee in her work, I thought she took pride in a job well done. I, on the other hand, found the work environment hostile, and already I was drawing up a complaint to her HR department.

Top Ten Things Not to leave in Your Car

The inspiration for this list came on a trip to Austin Texas a couple of weeks ago. Of course, I didn’t do any of these things, but they came to me while unloading the car. Also, I didn’t try to include kids and pets since there is nothing funny about a possible tragedy. I hope you enjoy.

Top Ten Things Not to Leave in Your Car

10 Do not leave a leftover Big Mac in your car. If you do, at best you will need to ride with the windows down for a week. At worst, you will have to call Terminix to get rid of your new insect passengers.(it was only there for a week after all)

9 Do not leave your phone in your car. If you do, at best the sun will give you a new look to your case. At worst, you will wish you had bought the insurance when you get your blob’s replacement price. (no one told you those things were so delicate did they?)

8 Do not leave your laundry in your car. If you do, at best those wrinkles will be permanent. At worst, those plastic bags will become part of your fabric. (You got a lot of compliments on the new look right?)

7 Do not leave your loaded gun in your car. (Texas after all) If you do, at best the temperature will remain below the flash point. At worst, your gun will go off and put a hole in the side of your car and the three others parked in a line parallel with yours. (It was going to be a quick run into the store right?)

6 Do not leave the twelve red roses in your car. If you do, at best the recipient will not notice a slight wilt. At worst, you will present someone with twelve stems and try to explain how $70.00 worth of blooms are on the floor of your car. ( Man the sun gets hot doesn’t it?)

5 Do not leave the first-grade birthday cupcakes in your car. If you do, at best you can tell the kids they are still warm from the oven. At worst, you will be trying to sell a new treat called cupcake crumble to gullible youth. (I’ll bet they don’t believe you. What do you think?)

4 Do not leave your keys in your car. If you do, at best the key man will only charge $75.00 to open the door. At worst, the local car thieves will be able to open your door for free, but you will never see the car again. (Sure it was an accident but still.)

3 Do not leave your suitcase in the car where it can be seen. At best,  no one will notice it on the backseat. At worst, whoever took out your back window figured you had thirty pounds of gold bars in that case. (Go figure. The window will only be $400.00)

2 Do not leave your half full coffee cup in the holder. If you do, at best when you return the coffee will be stale. At worst, you will take a sip and your lip will immediately blister from the 180-degree heat. (The melted handle should have been your hint.)

1 Do not leave your valuable CD  collection in your car.If you do, at best they may sound a little warped when you play them next. At worst, you will be the proud owner of  the largest stack of fused CDs (You can spend months trying to pry them apart.)

Sunday – Fifty-Two Views of the Gulf

Here is the first photo taken from my usual position.

As you can see there is a bunch of construction in the way. This part of the walkway will be a rest area (don’t laugh) with a bench. Here is where folks can take some time to look over the gulf and enjoy a sunrise or two. Since this view doesn’t show any of the Gulf I cheated and moved a little to the left.

Ahhh. That’s better. These posts will support the ramp that gradually slopes down to the beach. The weather is beautiful and unseasonably warm. The Gulf water temperature is 67 F which is about 10 degrees warmer that normal. The highs are in the mid-seventies and lows in the 60’s. All in all very pleasant.

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt – A Contraction

This week’s Stream of Consciousness prompt is a contraction. We are to start the post with a contraction and end it with one as well for extra credit. It ain’t going to be easy. Oh wait, maybe it will. If you would like to participate go to Linda’s site and you can read all about it. http://lindaghill.com/2016/02/19/the-friday-reminder-and-prompt-for-socs-feb-2016/ here is my contribution.

Contraction by John W. Howell © 2016

“Can’t you do something to help me?”

“Gosh, darling. I don’t know how I can help.”

“Aren’t you in this with me? After all, you’re the one who wanted that nightcap.”

“I know I’m equally to blame here honey, but I feel helpless.”

“Try useless. Get me some ice won’t you?”

“I’d rather stay and hold your hand.”

“I need ice. I don’t need a damn hand hold.”

“Okay, okay. I’m going. What’d the doctor say?”

“About what? I can’t read minds all t’sudden.”

“How long we’ll be going through this.”

“Through this? We? Who’d believe there is a we here. It looks like I’m the only worker.”

“When’s he coming?”

“I’d figgered he’d been here by now. I don’t know. I’m getting real close. Oh, there’s another contraction.”
