I never thought I would ever be considered old. I continued to work in business until I was seventy-one. It wasn’t a matter of loving what I was doing it was a matter of saving retirement money from being spent at one of Texas’ finest private schools for the youngest daughter. She graduated and it then became time to retire.
I did retire and began writing and so far have finished two books. One has been published and the other is with the publisher now. The third is at 36,000 words and should be finished by November first.
I still don’t consider myself old and am very fortunate to be able to function each day. I did get a small wake up call when I was crossing the beach one day while a bunch of college kids were attempting to drink Miller Lite brewery dry. I had to wait while a pickup truck filled with laughing and obviously toasted young girls passed by. One of the girls leaned out of the truck and gave me a greeting. Was the greeting “hi handsome, “or “hi good-looking?” No, it was “hi old man.”
So at least she wanted to say “hi,” and no I did not say “hi young, good looking, drunk and stupid girl,” back. Should have.

Haha wow! This post got me inspired and tickled. I am really amazed, John! Three books written in your 70s! I want to age as well as you have. Thanks for being such an inspiration.

It could be said that you are as old as you feel and I guess I’m feeling pretty young

I don’t have that word ‘old’ in my dictionary. I have no concept of it. Nervy little drunk girl.

My husband is sixty and insists he’s old. I keep telling him he’s not, but I am quickly catching up HA! I would have never guessed you are over seventy. You are so young in spirit. 🙂 I call anyone under forty a kid, perhaps because my oldest son is pushing forty. Still, a good margarita and I’m good to go 🙂

My oldest is 46. Youngest is 25. You can see why margarita’s have become my friend.

John, you wear your age well, both inside and out. I imagine a retirement similar to yours so thank you for the inspiration. And just remember all the dumb and stupid things we did and said when we were that girl’s age…on second thought, that’s probably best forgotten. 🙂

John – I feel as if I just met you and was bowled over by your youthful spirit and dry wit! I agree with everything you just said about age. I am about to retire and think it is a colossal joke as I have never felt younger, healthier or more in charge of who I am. I intend to have a ball!!

Some things they just don’t teach kids in college – like charm, for instance. 😛 Nice post, John. Made me smile 🙂

Glad you smiled.Might have been poetic license but the girl also slipped a nip which made me instantly forgive her.

😀 take it as a huge compliment John that she acknowledged your existence. I am still decades away from retirement age and yet am rarely greeted by teens or college kids (they don’t even make eye contact). Great post and video lol.

Thank you. I guess I should be grateful that at least I’m not one of the invisible ones. Thanks.

Ha, age is all in the mind. Isn’t that a cliché? Yes, I believe it is. I know folks in the eighties and they’re bouncing around town as if they were in their fifties. Very active folk, for sure! All in the mind. All in the mind! 😉
