Lucy is as Lucy Does

dogs 006

I wrote this poem a while ago when we rescued our Boxer named Lucy. She had been run over by a car and needed tender care. Today she is a happy, healthy, joy filled dog. She loves life and humans and I have always wondered why someone would turn her loose. So this poem is my humble way of recognizing the strong heart of this beautiful fur child. There is no special reason to post it now other than I feel very fortunate to have her in my life.

Lucy by John W. Howell © 2013

She started her life as a battered child,

Let loose on the streets and hit by a car.

It was not her fault since she knew nothing,

Of what a ton of steel on wheels could do.

She is all white with two brown spots,

And recovered with the best of care.

She is friendly and kind without a single trace,

Of the hatred that she could rightfully show.

Whoever turned her out to live or die on the street,

Is the unfortunate one for not having her love each day.

They are the poorer for having been denied,

The joy, love, happiness and life of Lucy.

Every day she is ready to share in living,

With the innocence born of security and love.

  1. She is adorable – you are both so lucky to have found each other. My daughter means the world to me and my sons. We could not imagine a day without her in it:) Sydnee Pee is a tripod – she was let go of as a puppy – found as a stray with a mangled leg. I will always be grateful for the powers that be that brought her to me:)

    1. Wow. Beautiful story. I used to feel some sadness when seeing a tri pod but there are so many stories of open hearts and mutual love that now I feel happy for both. I m glad you found each other.

      1. it’s is funny you would say that about tripods – i have had people stop and tell me that I am such a wonderful person for having taken her in and i have had people ask why did i choose to adopt a dog with three legs? My answer has always been – why would i not? besides, i did not choose her really – she chose us:) Believe me – she is a puppy doggy like all other puppy doggies – and a total princess at that!

  2. We have an adopted doggie also. She took some time to adjust because she was lost during Hurricane Charley and is still very much afraid during thunderstorms.. I am glad that Lucy has you in her life 🙂

  3. Isn’t amazing how dogs take your heart away from you? My 12 week pup is sleeping on my lap as I type 🙂 I love your poem. What a sweet tribute. You’re going to have to teach me how to write poetry one of these days!

  5. all my animals have chosen me…
some days I am tired of cleaning feeding and hearing meows, barking,Zoro talks ALOT(she’s a parrot) the geese are messy and sometimes loud in their yakking to each other
but then they do something silly or come to me and just lean on me and I can’t imagine my life without all my zoo..( I have/had 4 bucks with only 3 legs) they loved the mound of soil/compost, they could lean in and just lay down, get up easier too…but to see them room, you would never know they were different from the ones that had 4 legs…
Bucky my favorite came to me with his mom..she had been hit by a car and made it to my greenhouse where I was working, she died shortly after I came to her..she seemed relieved her son would be safe…he stayed for 5 years…he is missed…
What a wonderful poem and I understand the need to write ….
Thank you for sharing, she is a sweet one ….
    Take Care….You Matter…
