Views of the Neighborhood

Today’s view of the neighborhood is multiple pictures of an amazing place we have in Port Aransas. The place is Winton’s Island Candies. Here is the view from the parking lot.

Winton Island Candies

The front window on the right gives you a hint as to the unique nature of the shop.

Wintons

Yes, that’s right. It says Live rattlesnake. So let’s go inside.

Wintons

This photo is the front counter where you get a bag and try to stop yourself from filling it with all the delicious candy. Above the counter is an array of signs. Most are pictures of presidents past and future. Note the price of candy by the bag. Eight bucks. Best be careful with the heavy ones.

The next is a shot of the model A Ford truck with Tuna in the background.

Then we have some shots of the candy around the shop.

Old fashioned candy

More Candy

Candy you used to get as a kid

Still more candy

And special displays and pictures.

A favorite of the owner

Where is that rattlesnake advertised on the window?

Wintons

Nope not a Rattlesnake but a turtle

We demand the Rattlesnake!!!!

IMG_0033

There he is.

A lot of other fun stuff to see.

Wintons

Yes the red sign says Rattlesnake

A Lot of fun things to do.

Wintons

Joe

Don’t forget there is more candy.

Wintons

Y’all come back again.

Between the relics and the candy – I could live in this store! BUT – the rattlesnake would Have to go. I have eaten rattler meat before, maybe I could hold a bar-b-que…um……food for thought.

I’ve never seen a shop anything like that, John; a veritable treasure trove, plus a couple of things I’d rather avoid – live rattlesnake mostly.

Applesauce, John! I really don’t know how you’re finding time to do everything. Please take good care of you.
But… This is a fun post. I’m half way to a toothache, but have a strange craving for those sugared orange slice looking gummy candy things… (I’m not crazy for candy unless it’s chocolate or caramel, but right now those nameless orange things…) Safe journey to LA. Maybe a photo or 2 from there can be your neighborhood post for next week? Mr. Mojo Rising…. Now i’ve slipped into The Doors… More coffee…
    Mega hugs my friend.

Thanks, Teagan for the nice note. All the stuff in the store looked good enough to eat other than the turtle and snake. One of my favorite things is the Ghirardelli chocolate square filled with caramel. YUM and Hugs

So this is what keeps you young, John. Oh my, what a treat (pun intended). Who doesn’t love candy? The snake, I’m with GP, light the grill.

    Good morning, John
I’ve never been to that store. Need to some time – not to see the rattler, though. Definitely not. But all that candy. Oh, ever so yummy.
Enjoy the day and have a great 4th,
    Pit

Texas goodies and rattlesnakes…oh my! My son had a pet one in GA. I lived in fear the whole time.

Still trying to figure out what a rattlesnake — even a “caged” one — has to do with all that candy. Don’t you have a health board or something to drop by now and then to slap a few wrists??!

Not sure of the tie in either. I guess it is like an alligator at a road side zoo.

A fascinating place. The smell of all that s.w.e.e.t. would have me in a coma in no time. Ouch. My teeth ache. 🙂
I remember we’d go to the store with a ‘quarter’ to buy candy. If you were smart, you always picked the ones that sold the most for a penny. Before you knew it, you had candy for the whole neighborhood. 😀

Ha ha. The only time I was given a quarter, my mom was in hospital having another baby and I made a fuss I didn’t want to stay with the lady who looked after me cause Dad had to go to work.
BTW, I am not here. Okay? 🙂

Wow! I have driven by this place but never stopped. Maybe I will next time as I can’t resist old-fashioned candy. I think it could do without the rattlesnake though but I can see where it would be a tourist draw. I grew up seeing enough of them!
