Today I thought I would take you on a tour of some of the places we all love to go to grab something quick. It may be a sweet or something for dinner. I purposely left out the pizza places, and fast food joints cause you can see those right where you are. So here we go.
Our first stop is a place where you can grab crabs and shrimp. They also have some bait, but most of the business is fish, crabs, and shrimp. Here is the sign on Highway 361. (don’t be confused it is a two lane road.)
Now a shot of the store
If you are in the mood for something cold, then a sno-cone is right up your alley. Here is Tropical Sno in the Spanky’s liquor store parking lot (Could be worse)
The building is cute and fits with the burnt orange of the Spanky decor. Not to be confused with that Coors Light semi in the background.
How about a pickle sno-cone. (you first)
Right across the street is a shaved ice stand. Now you have to know the difference between a sno-cone and shaved ice. I’ll bet you thought I was going to tell you didn’t you. Well okay, a sno-cone is served in a paper cone and is crunchy. The syrup added more or less makes its way to the bottom where the last bites are the most delicious. Shaved ice is finer and resembles snow. The syrup generally penetrates all the snow, so each bite is uniform. It is usually served in a foam cup.(Even though Nola’s sign looks like it is in a paper cone. There, now you know.
We also have Ice cream on the island and in fact tow ice cream shops. This one is cute and like all things, in Port A it has an interesting neighbor.
I will be doing a feature on tattoo parlors another time but doesn’t this place look interesting?
Here is the other Ice Cream parlor. By the way, that circle of what looks like smoke is a Blue Angel. They are giving a show in Corpus Christi. I didn’t even know I had caught it until I got home.
Here is another view. The place is called “Desserted Island.”
Our final stop is the newest fish place. The guy’s name is Paul, and this is Pauls Seafood. Paul is very popular in Corpus Christi, and he took over another seafood shop here in Port A. I’m sorry, but the idea of live crawfish gives me the willies.

This was a fun morning jaunt. The dolphin, in the Desserted Island photo, looks like it is being lassoed – you might have the beginnings of a TX story. 🙂

Nice photos, John. It looks like you guys are on permanent vacation. We have places like this, near the shore, but they’re all still boarded up for the winter.

I always look forward to these tours, John. The photos are great with the colorful buildings against the blue sky, it brightens my day. “Live crawfish gives me the willies.” Me too! I’d be getting some of that shaved ice every day!

Visiting your neighborhood has become my favorite part of Sunday morning, John. Snocone vs shaved ice? I never knew. I’ll forgo the pickle snocone, but I’d take a cranberry one. (What a selection!) I wonder if they’d mix cranberry and lime… I see the other tattoo place across the parking lot from the snocones. But I think I’d have to spend considerable time at Spanky’s bar before I went for a tattoo… very considerable time… 😀 Have a sublime Sunday. Mega hugs!

Thanks, John, for giving us fresh ideas. The only place we’ve been to so far is Tropical Ice Cream. We’ll explore more next time in Port A. Before that, though, we’ll be to Galveston [next week, for my 70th birthday].

Another great look at your town. It might make a good story with a sno-cone stand across the street from a shaved ice stand. Kind of like one of those competing Christmas lights comedies.

I’m sitting here wrapped up like an Egyptian Mummy, telling myself that this new and marvelous cold-country-air will not freeze my tush off if I venture outside. Sigh. This delightful post and these images make me hungry for Summer and Ice-cream and seafood! Mind you, I do love breathing in Champagne air in lieu of city smog! Port A looks just lovely, John. Bang goes the diet John… and brought back great memories.. Friday nights we would hit a seafood place near where we lived.. I loved shrimp with spicy tomato dip and David loved the Oysters.. great post thank you..

I was at a place last night that offered 22 shrimp for $19.00. Not sure I could eat 22 shrimp.
