Wednesday Story Day – AKA Hump Day

Hump Day

It is Wednesday Story Day again. Last week we left Alice and Mrs. Murphy having a small disagreement about who is going to sign the hospital papers. The important point here is Lucas needs the surgery, and the hospital can’t do anything without the authorization. So while the two argue poor Lucas is laying in the ER in a state of limbo. Let’s go to the hospital and see if these two will come to their senses and Lucas can get the treatment he needs.

“I said, Ladies, please. You two will need to stop arguing. I need Mrs. Murphy’s signature right now, or there is a chance Lucas is not going to recover.”
“Yes, Alice. Why don’t you take your cougar butt out of here.”
“Oh, look who’s talking? The over the hill heifer in heat.”
“If I weren’t such a lady I would make you take that back.”
“Lady of the night you mean.”
“Okay, that’s it, ladies. Mrs. Weston, you need to leave.”
“I’ll go, but Y’all have not heard the end of this.”
“Just go, Alice. Think of Lucas.”
“I’m thinking of Lucas. In fact, I’m trying to figure out how to keep him safe from you.”
“Oh please. I’m his employer, not some tramp trying to get him in bed.”
“You can go on kidding yourself Harriet, but you are not fooling me. You would take advantage of that poor boy if you could.”
“Enough now Mrs. Weston. Please go through that door and wait in the waiting room. We will give you an update as soon as we know anything.”
“Thank you, nurse Campbell. Take care of him.”
“We will.”
“Where do I sign?”
“Right here.”
“There you are. What else should I do?”
“I think you should wait with Mrs. Weston. I hope you two won’t kill each other.”
“Oh, that? Don’t worry. We have known each other a long time. We have a strange relationship but are harmless.”
“That is good to know.”
“How long until we get information about Lucas.”
“The surgery should take about two hours. He should be awake fully an hour after that so I would say three hours.”
“Thank you, Nurse Campbell.”
“You are welcome Mrs. Murphy.”

  1. Well, the nurse finally told Alice to leave and go to the waiting room. Lucas now has a chance. Ha, ha. I liked the Latin at the top. Clever people those Romans. 🙂 — Suzanne

  2. I hope Nurse Campbell’s estimates of surgery and recovery time aren’t too wildly adrift. I worry for Lucas (even though I am still unsure about his position in relation to the death of his parents).

    1. We need t sort out a few things. Let’s get Lucas back on his feet and then deal with the rest. (Or not)

  3. Hope Lucas recovers quickly and sneaks out. Seems to be some real headaches waiting for him.

    1. looks that way doesn’t it. 🙂

  4. It’s going to be a long three hours til next Wednesday. Will either of the cougars have survived. I wonder if Lucas will be OK and or whether he’s said anything about his sister or his parents under the anaesthetic?

    1. Too bad we have to wait. Thanks David.

  5. “Why don’t you take your cougar butt out of here.” You made me spew my water on the screen! Poor Lucas. At least it’s almost Friday.

    1. I’m glad it was water. Those Latte’s can be a bear to clean up. Thank you, Jill. 😀

  6. Great dialog, John – as Jill quoted above! Looking forward to the next segment – cat fight in the waiting room?

    1. I suspect there two have some kind of persona that we don’t see yet.

      1. I know the drill… stay tuned!

      2. Yup. And no Molson between episodes.

  7. Nothing like a little petty and steamy drama to help your surgery along. Love the dialog, John. I hope Lucas doesn’t lose anything important while under the knife.

    1. Maybe he can borrow one. 🙂

  8. Whew! At last, Lucas has a chance. But a chance for what is the question. 🙂

    1. I know, right? Wait until he wakes up. Hoo Boy. 🙂

  9. Well that went fairly smooth I’d say. Hope Lucas gets through his surgery without incident.

    1. Well it is a minor repair so I think he will.

  10. Gwen Plano · ·

I like to try to anticipate the writer’s next move, but you’ve got me baffled, John. Unless…. the characters have taken over the story, and we are all at their mercy. Whatever, this will be an adventure for sure! 😊

    1. The characters own this one. All I have is the last three lines. They are taking us there nicely. Thanks, Gwen.

  11. And now we wait to see how Lucas fares.

I found Mrs. Murphy’s comment “We have known each other a long time. We have a strange relationship but are harmless” enlightening. Strange indeed!

    1. Um hummmmm. Hopefully we will get more info.

  12. Have to admit – I snorted at cougar butt and heifer in heat.

    1. Good. I was trying for that. Thanks Teri. Love your snort

  13. This story seems to have a life of its own! Love how you’ve kind of shepherded us to the location, then let the characters take the wheel. Isn’t it amazing how one calm, sensible soul can soothe an angry cougar and heifer?!?

    1. Of course the Nurse has the power. I think she was wise to put her foot down.

  14. Such a wonderful exchange. Can’t wait for the next installment.

    1. Thank’s Craig.

  15. Oh-oh… when Lucas wakes up, do we add Nurse Campbell to the cougars waiting to extend tinder loving care? With the effort she’s put into keeping the other 2 apart, she might feel an investment. 😀 That’s quite a teaser you left about the “strange but harmless” relationship, John. Hmmm… Can’t wait to see where we go next. Mega hugs.

    1. I’m not sure I can handle three after Lucas. Yes there is more to these two women than we’ve seen

  16. You do hospital drama well, John.

    1. Thank you. Maybe cause I put on scrubs

      1. When you write?
        Wow, you’re really method…

      2. Naw. I was pulling your leg.

  17. Phew! Lucas will get the surgery! Now maybe the l̶a̶d̶i̶e̶s̶ cougars will behave in the waiting room.

    1. Let’s see shall we?

  18. Great, glad to see the Nurse sort that Alice out at last. Hope poor Lucas will be okay. This week Wednesday sure didn’t feel like nearly Friday for me, John. It has been really loooooong!

    1. Thank you for the share, Robbie.

  20. Trump just canceled poor Lucas’ surgery. Better luck next time chappy!

    Great stuff, Boss.

    1. Pulled the healthcare card huh?. Maybe we can find a vet to do the job.

      1. Vets are pretty thorough. And they come in handy in the event of Lyme disease, so there’s that.

    1. I am glad you like it. Thank you. 🙂

      1. You are welcome John.
