Today’s views are of the neighborhood that I have been in since Monday. There have been so many things to see and here is a sample of the city.
The requisite view of the surrounding countryside as we come in for a landing.
This is a shot of street where the apartment we stayed is located. The entrance is below grade through the gate which is just after the stairs.
This is a view of Edinburgh taken from Calton Hill. It was taken at 9:45 pm and the sun was just beginning to set.
This is a photo taken at Edinburg Castle. The young, serious, well dressed, military man is in charge of shooting the 1:00 cannon (which is done daily) which you can see in the background. The other guy looks like a writer or homeless person to me.
This is a shot of the castle. The day was spectacular.

The botanical gardens in Edinburgh are vast and interesting. Here is a photo of giant lily pads.
This is Hoyroodhouse, the ceremonial palace of Queen Elizabeth.
The Holyroodhuse Abby ruins. This Catholic church was destroyed in 1133.
This is my attempt at art. A shot of the Edinburgh Castle taken at night with a view of an old town street.

Incredible images of your journey, John; thank you for sharing. I can’t help but smile when I look at the photo of the two gentlemen. The older of the two looks elated and in his element, standing next to a cannon and a military guard. Hmm, a thriller writer perhaps? 🙂 Enjoy every moment!

It is a monument to Dugald Stewart who was a professor at the University of Edinburgh and known for his lectures. His lectures became known as “The Scottish Enlightenment.” Thanks for the advice on the cannon.

We had a great time in Edinburgh, though we flew into London and took the Flying Scotsman there. Be sure and ride the trains, they’re fantastic.
Assuming the sergeant was with the Royal Regiment of Scotland, was he wearing a kilt or trews?
As I recall, St. Giles is where the Thistle Chapel is, where the Knights of the Order of the Thistle meet. Did you get a chance to see it?

He was in trews. Was not able to see the chapel. There was a service starting and we had to go.

The only time I’ve been to Edinburg was with Rick Steves’ Europe on PBS. Thank you for reinforcing and expanding my visit. Lovely photos and an enjoyable “read.”

The weather was fabulous. Got a sunburn if you can imagine. Went on to the highlands, then to Glasgow. Home tomorrow. Thank you for the comment, Charlotte.
