Yesterday was a big day in Port Aransas. There were two main events taking place. The first is the annual dog surfing contest. The second is the deep-sea fishing tournament. This week I will feature the dog surfing contest and next week will be the deep-sea fishing contest.

The dog surfing contest is put on to benefit the local dog rescue group in Port Aransas.

The first photo will take you back to the 60’s. The VW micro mini bus is the source of the sounds of the event.

Port Aransas Dog Surfing Contest

Here is a shot of a contestant waiting for the under 25-pound class.

Here are a couple of lightweights cruising in on a wave

Finally made it to the beach

Some spectators were there with their humans

Waiting for the above 25-Pound class

He is up and riding

Rode it all the way.

I think he may be in trouble

Yup need to take that big step.

Now the champ catches the curl

Steady as she goes.

Dog surfing

And a great finish

The Texas Surf Camp was in session while the dog surfing was in progress.

  1. Great event, John. Are there ever any quarrels about who won? Good pictures. 😀 — Suzanne

    1. There are three judges so very seldom is there a tie. Thanks, Suzanne.

What fun! The expressions on the dogs are priceless…. I hope they earned something special for their efforts. 🙂

  3. Looks like a fun day! It figures that [what appears to be] a blond Lab is the Texas champ – they love the water! Got a big kick out of the ’60’s VW van too!!

  8. John, that looks like a ton of fun. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that at our beaches out here, but now I’ll have to see if they hold any similar events. Angus would get a kick out of it.

    1. Angus would love it for sure. Contact your local pet adoption group and see if they thought of it as a fund raiser.

  15. Aw, so cute! I don’t think Dallas would enjoy surfing, even if it were for charity. His thick double-coat would pull him right under that water. It doesn’t escape my notice that most of these contestants are dogs with “slick” coats!

  16. The big dogs seem to be having fun and more relaxed than the small ones. I kept waiting to see if Bailey and Lucy were entered but maybe next year. Always something fun in Port A!

    1. Bailey and Lucy would enter if they didn’t have to go in the water to participate. Land surfers they are.

  18. Cowabunga! What could be more fun than surfing dogs? I didn’t see Lucy and Bailey anywhere. I guess you prudently left them at home, to make sure they didn’t become Gidgets to any Moon Doggies! Mega hugs.
