Views of the Neighborhood

Yesterday was a big day in Port Aransas. There were two main events taking place. The first is the annual dog surfing contest. The second is the deep-sea fishing tournament. This week I will feature the dog surfing contest and next week will be the deep-sea fishing contest.

The dog surfing contest is put on to benefit the local dog rescue group in Port Aransas.

The first photo will take you back to the 60’s. The VW micro mini bus is the source of the sounds of the event.

Port Aransas Dog Surfing Contest

Here is a shot of a contestant waiting for the under 25-pound class.

Here are a couple of lightweights cruising in on a wave

Finally made it to the beach

Some spectators were thereΒ with their humans

Waiting for the above 25-Pound class

He is up and riding

Rode it all the way.

I think he may be in trouble

Yup need to take that big step.

Now the champ catches the curl

Steady as she goes.

Dog surfing

And a great finish

The Texas Surf Camp was in session while the dog surfing was in progress.

  1. Great event, John. Are there ever any quarrels about who won? Good pictures. πŸ˜€ — Suzanne

    1. There are three judges so very seldom is there a tie. Thanks, Suzanne.

What fun! The expressions on the dogs are priceless…. I hope they earned something special for their efforts. πŸ™‚

    1. Just a lot of praise which they seem to enjoy. (A few biscuits too.)

  3. Looks like a fun day! It figures that [what appears to be] a blond Lab is the Texas champ – they love the water! Got a big kick out of the ’60’s VW van too!!

    1. Those labs are hard to beat. Thanks, GP

  4. Very cute. Good to see the dogs are wearing their vests. Safety first.

    1. That is a requirement for sure.

  5. I remember this contest from last year John. It’s certainly one of my favorite events hosted by your town. How fun it must be to watch it live. Thanks for sharing the great action shots! Happy Sunday!

    1. It does go on each year. (My how time flies)

      1. You can say that again.

  6. Lots of doggies beach fun going on there! πŸ˜€

    1. There is Thanks, Jan

  7. Now, let’s see you try that with cats. πŸ™‚

    1. Ha ha ha. A tiger maybe. πŸ˜€

  8. John, that looks like a ton of fun. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that at our beaches out here, but now I’ll have to see if they hold any similar events. Angus would get a kick out of it.

    1. Angus would love it for sure. Contact your local pet adoption group and see if they thought of it as a fund raiser.

  9. What a fun event! Thanks for sharing the photos, John. I didn’t notice Lucy or Baily, is that your choice or theirs?

    1. They decided to stay in the house. It was 90 degrees.

      1. “You go, John. Have fun…😴😴”

      2. Ha ha ha. That was about it

  10. A very entertaining event, John – great photography too! Looks like everyone had lots of fun.

  11. I bet the dogs really enjoyed their day! Great photos.

    1. They were all having fun. Thanks, Michelle

  12. Good morning, John,
Picture #6 made me wonder whom you were talking of when you said “above 25 pound class”! πŸ˜‰
    Have a great Sunday,
    Pit

    1. Ha ha ha. Pit. πŸ˜€

  13. Reblogged this on Smorgasbord – Variety is the spice of life and commented:
How wonderful to be on John Howell’s beach this weekend with the dog surfing competition… ahhhhhh..

    1. Thank you, Sally. XX

  14. Looks like a super fun event. Thanks for sharing it with us.

    1. It is a fun time. These guys all enjoy it.

  15. Aw, so cute! I don’t think Dallas would enjoy surfing, even if it were for charity. His thick double-coat would pull him right under that water. It doesn’t escape my notice that most of these contestants are dogs with “slick” coats!

    1. And life vests. Thanks, Debbie.

  16. The big dogs seem to be having fun and more relaxed than the small ones. I kept waiting to see if Bailey and Lucy were entered but maybe next year. Always something fun in Port A!

    1. Bailey and Lucy would enter if they didn’t have to go in the water to participate. Land surfers they are.

  17. Well this just looks like a whole lot of fun for everyone involved!

    1. It was fun, Lunn. Thanks.

  18. Cowabunga! What could be more fun than surfing dogs? I didn’t see Lucy and Bailey anywhere. I guess you prudently left them at home, to make sure they didn’t become Gidgets to any Moon Doggies! Mega hugs.

    1. Also I left them home cause they begged to stay home. (big whimps) Thanks, Teagan. Hugs

  19. All I have to say is . . . my van!

PS- Those dogs sure can surf.

      1. Hahaha! I tried!

      2. Ha ha ha. Good try. Now remove your hand from the door latch. Nice and slow. *click

      3. Not gonna lie . . . I’m a little scared right now. πŸ˜‰

      4. Naw don’t be scared. I was just rehearsing my Duke role. Besides there are blanks in the 45.

      5. Well as far as I’m concerned, you got the role! πŸ˜ƒ

      6. Oh thank you. I also like Clint Eastwood when he said, “In all the excitement I can’t remember if I fired five or six times. How about it? Do you feel lucky? Huh do you punk?”

    1. Thanks, Jan. πŸ™‚

  20. How fun to watch! Glad Sally introduced me to your blog! I’ll be in your part of our great state at the end of July… and good recommendations to do for 2 days?

    1. For the latest information on what’s going on go to the chamber. Here is the link https://portaransas.org/

  23. The surfing dog is precious.

    1. They all were precious. Thanks, Jacqui

  24. Omg, too cute. πŸ™‚

    1. Thank you, Debby.

      1. Welcome John. πŸ™‚

  25. LOL! What fun! Thanks for sharing! Hope the winner got a tasty treat.

    1. I’m sure they did. Thanks, Deborah

  26. Thus looks like a lot of fun. Thanks for sharing, John

    1. It was fun. Thanks, Audrey.

  27. What great fun, John. Nice to see that size did not matter in who competed in the contest. I wonder if any of them skateboard? πŸ€”

    1. Good question. I would say probably. Thanks, Hugh

      1. I wonder if any of those skateboarding dogs ever get humans running by the side of them while barking? πŸ€”

      2. Always Ha ha ha.
