Friday JohnKu – AKA – TGIF

TGIF

I Always like Fridays. It is almost a signal to do something fun. People keep asking me why I like Fridays if in fact I am retired. The answer is pretty straightforward.  Friday is still the golden standard to measure the week. I don’t know about you, but I tend to write more during the week than on Saturday and Sunday. The week seems like it has been set aside for work and the weekend for play. I suppose Friday represents the cut off between feeling accomplished and being given permission to be lazy. So why not celebrate its arrival retired or not?

This week was good in that our roof was completed. I don’t know what it is about a metal roof, but there is an enormous amount of pounding that goes with the installation. All is quiet now. We also have the contractor who is repairing our sun deck, railings, and garage actually working. YAY. He is doing all kinds of demolition. (which contractors love to do) Always have to hope he’ll come back and put everything back together. This brings up today’s JohnKu. It is about the ease of dismantling. I hope you have a super weekend.

Tear Down by John W. Howell © 2017

The dismantling,

Of buildings and or people. . .

Easy. Rebuild tough.

Your JohnKu captures the process powerfully. Destruction happens fast, rebuilding is labor and time intensive. All is transformed in the end, the project and us. Blessings to you and yours. 🙂

Thanks Gwen. I was also thinking about how people don’t think before they give “constructive criticism.” Once done the repair process may take forever. 🙂

I’m retired as well, but still feel a sense of accomplishment for making it to Friday!! Nothing like being a creature of habit, eh?!!

Never thought of how Friday is perceived even during retirement or vacation periods. We’re raised to separate the week and weekend, so I guess the difference never goes away.

Yikes. I do hope they return. We’ve had a couple of contractors who left us hanging in the past. Good luck.

As for the metal roof? I’m sure the construction noise was ridiculously loud, but doesn’t it sound heavenly in the rain?

Yes it does, Staci. We had some rain while the roof was off and it wasn’t the same.

When I was young, we had metal awnings, one of which was right outside my bedroom window. When I got older (but still lived at home) we had an extensive remodel, and the metal awnings were replaced with shingles. The renovations were really nice—porches were removed, expanded, or turned into a larger sunroom—but I always missed the sound of rain on metal.

I’m glad you got the wonderful sound back.

Yay! Glad the roof is done. Now Bailey and Lucy can relax…that is until the next round. You are so right. It is much easier to tear down than rebuild and that applies to most every facet of life. Happy Friday!

But it’s the thorough demolition that makes the rebuild job easier. Always easier to work from a clean start. As Mike Holmes used to say on his TV show, “this all has to go!”

A particularly strong JohnKu, today, and I love your take on Fridays. Retired or not, there is magic that comes with every Friday.

So glad to hear the repairs are progressing. We just did a complete gut of our dining room and kitchen, knocking down the wall between them for one large room. It’s amazing the mess contractors can make. They’re like kids having fun when they get to demolish things!

Ahh, I’m jealous that you’re retired, John, but happy for you. We are so ready mentally, but not financially. 🙂 One more still to get through college. So, Fridays are always welcomed, and I hope all goes smoothly with the rebuilding, too. Happy Weekend! 🙂

I had to wait until my daughter graduated from Baylor (can you say expensive?) before kicking it in. I actually worked until I was 701/2. I think it was a good thing.
