Views of the Neighborhood – 1st Annual Trash Dash

Port Aransas held its First Annual Trash Dash yesterday. Although a brief downpour made everything wet, it did not dampen the enthusiasm of the participants

Here is a shot of the registration table. All participants got a T-shirt and a collection bag. The idea is to go out and for one hour collect trash on the beach. The most trash collected wins first prize.

A photo of one of the volunteers Angie Huckabay will give you an idea of the front of the shirt.

The back shows the sponsors and the plea to Keep Texas Beaches Clean.

Here is a mom and her children signing up to participate.

Here is a French Bulldog in the mud and mugging for the camera.

Here is a shot of the trophies. There are awards for the first, second, and third place.

On the way home, we spotted that the missing sea captain (from Hurricane Harvey) is being replaced. I will bring you an after shot when he is complete.

What a great idea, John. So sad that some of the human race feel the need to throw away their rubbish anywhere. I love the thought behind the idea of having a contest to see who can collect the most rubbish, though. Some of the participants look a bit cold. Was there a chill in the air after the brief downpour?

That seems like a wonderful idea, sad that it’s necessary, but wonderful that people will work to clean the beaches. Litter is one of those problems I thought we solved in the 60s

Good for you! Those events are such fun. We’ve had a Galveston Bay Trash Bash for several years now. People enjoy it, and it’s so satisfying that more participate every year. I’m sure the same will be true there.

I laughed out loud at the slogans on the trophies: especially third place. And I was pleased to see those yellow bags — donated from the state, perhaps? Some state agency provides them along the rivers that are used for tubing, so people can attach them to their tubes and put their beer cans in them, rather than throwing them into the river or along the bank. It seems to help a good bit.

I am always amazed at the sloppiness of human beings. On the beach you see it more than any other place. I think people believe it is not their job to pick up trash they throw down. Thanks, Linda.

This is ingenious, and the t-shirts are fantastic. What a great event! And to top it off, little Twiggy jumps in the mix and offers hugs and smiles. Can’t beat that! 😀

What a great idea, though it makes me sad to think that something like a Trash Dash even needs to be held. I mean, I’m certain you have containers set up along the beach for stuff people no longer want. Why are some too lazy to use them? Got a kick out of the Frenchie — isn’t that what Twiggy is?
