Another Friday has rolled around. The winter vortex is in full force. I’ve been getting reports from the North on terrifying stories about getting stranded in the cold. Reminds us all to take warm outerwear whenever we venture out. It is way too easy to be caught in the elements and then be made to suffer the effects of the cold.
Here in South Texas, we don’t have the kind of cold that is capable of taking life. We start to complain at 70 degrees and whine at 40 but don’t have to worry about a life-threatening situation. I hope everyone stays safe and remembers to toss in some heavy outdoor wear even if you are only going to the store.
Today’s JohnKu discusses the cold. I hope you all have a beautiful weekend.

You can be taken,
Without even noticing . . .
How bitter the Temp.
You don’t have to worry about the cold in winter but you must certainly do have to worry about the heat come summer. It’s crazy how bitterly cold some regions have it. It’s been no picnic here but I still feel luckier than those areas with the -45C… scary.
Lovely Johnku. And may you and your gang have a most wonderful weekend!

John,
A friend of mine had to deal with a furnace that decided to go out in the middle of the night. On the coldest night of year, of course. The things we take for granted until we don’t have them, I tell you what.

It does not take long for pipes to freeze when the heat shuts down. I know about taking things for granted. We do it all the time.

You ain’t kidding. It’s the little things that really are not such little things.

Like an ambient temperature of 70.

My daughter and her husband in Chicago are just staying inside. A lot of venues are closed down. —- Suzanne

I think that is wise. Thanks, Suzanne.

It’s mighty cold in the Ozarks, and I long for California beach weather. It’s time for bundling and hiding indoors. Take care of you and yours. 🙂

I worry about those in the freezing zone, but I’m glad it’s not here in Idaho this time.

Me too. (glad it’s not freezing here)

I’ve heard those stories, too. A farmer friend in Illinois came very close to real trouble with hypothermia and one in Michigan posted about a statewide plea to turn thermostats down to 65 because of a fire at a natural gas storage facility that supplies 65% of the state’s heating sources. Winter’s an annoyance, until it becomes a killer.

The cold and I have reached an understanding: I don’t venture outside and it won’t kill me. Today’s weather right now? -24C (11.2F)

Just saw this tidbit about two possible records for Ft. Wayne, Indiana. The other day, a record low of -13 …. Sunday is a possible record high of 55. That’s a crazy swing!

I would say. Glad I don’t live in Ft Wayne.

Just saw another one … a town in northern Minnesota … -56 to 30.

I would think not unless you are in the foundation repair business.

Yes, it has been nasty here. Peyton goes to Iowa State and has been out of school since Tuesday. and here in NW Burbs of Chicago, we have been freezing our tails off. No mail for the past two days, businesses closed – Wednesday could have been mistaken for Christmas morning – that eerie feeling where there are no cars on the road, quiet everywhere except the noises the house makes….all so surreal.

I used to live in Palatine and then Maringo. I understand those NW winters. Stay warm, Kimberly.

I’ve been reading some of the other temps on here and feel kind of fortunate that our worst was -2. It’s 10 right now, but we’re expecting 50ish weather next week. I can’t wait! Keep sending that Gulf air up this way 🙂

We are hitting close to 70 today. Next week will nice but in the 60’s. No, not below zero.

Nice, John. Walked our crazy little redhead around the yard at -3°f this morning. She was looking for the bunny that has taken to resting inside the reasonably well-covered air conditioning compressor area. “No hunting – it’s too cold!”

We’ve warmed back up to the 40s, but even the local university called off classes on Wednesday due to the temps.

Doesn’t seem fair. My university never called off class even at below zero temps.

Port Aransas is SOO tempting right now.
But at least we won’t get inundated by spring breakers in six weeks. That’s a positive. 🙂

When it gets this cold in Central Illinois, I hunker down, throw on more layers, and stay inside! Even the Sheltie doesn’t relish being out in that howling wind. However, today the sun is shining, and we’re hoping for a nice February thaw.

I can’t imagine how cold it feels at those bitter temperatures. I don’t think I’ve been in anything under 0. Always good advice to dress warmly. If it’s under 50 here I’m bundled up:)

Wrote a gorgeous response and WP erased. Lil pup is AFFIRMING power and humor. A girl needs to kick her heels up on occasion, whether it is 4 or 2. Gorgeous!
As for cold? note airline increase for folks who’d LOVE to go somewhere else. In CA, the whining begins at 72 degrees and continues as a chant whine until 72 returns. You in Texas have your own brand of weather drama: rain. I remember when. buckets, dramatic buckets on my head.

WP is like that. It does rain like that in Texas.

In Scotland, folks handle winter cold by wearing the same outfit all winter, and using water bottles.
That does NOT cover this debacle, however, in the midwest. I truly have compassion for them.
ANd IT’S DANGEROUS.
