Today we are going to attend the Lakeway Autopark open house. This event doesn’t take place often, but this was the weekend for it. We are boing catered by Matties of Austin and music by the (who else) B52’s

The US Navy North American Aviation T-28 VT-5 trainer parks. This one is marked with service on the USS Lexington, the same ship my father served on in World War II. Although my Dad was a Naval Aviator, this trainer was not in service until 1948, which was after my Dad left the service

Is that last yellow plane perhaps a Mooney? When I began hanging around Kerrville, one of my friends’ fathers was an exec with the company there, and my friend himself was a ‘frequent flyer’ up to the EAA gatherings in Oshkosh. He and his wife lived near Comfort; he’d build a series of hangars around a grass field, and we’d sit out there and barbeque and drink beer and talk planes.

Of course it is. Looks like a typo. A Mooney is the first plane I ever flew. It had integrated controls so that turns were always co-ordinated. It was like driving a car. Thanks for the subtle hint there was a mistake there.

We enjoy airshows and displays. I haven’t heard The B52s in ages. Wonder what they are doing these days? I made French toast for breakfast this morning. Always a good choice.

Very good. The yellow piper cub is the same plane I took my flying lessons in (well not THE same plane). But great memories. My instructor called my landings “controlled crashes.”
And I’ll take sausage and eggs please.

I would love to see this, as would a friend of mine who likes to fly – he’s taken me up twice. How lucky you are to have this! As for the food, despite the terrible caloric load, I’ll have the milk punch
French toast as an homage to my father, one of whose specialties was milk punch!

Loved the tour, John. We have an airshow once a year where vintage planes fly over our lake and do stunts. Such fun to watch.

Embry–Riddle Aeronautical University is near us and we listen to/watch small craft every day. I love it! Thank you for sharing this event with us — music, food, and good company. Can’t beat it! 😊

What a fun thing to do on a beautiful morning, John. I enjoyed the photos. “A modern Cirrus plane. (The one that can deploy a parachute in case of trouble)” – does the actual plane have a parachute? I’ve never heard of that and what a great idea! And very cool to see the type of plane your father flew. That must have been something to see for you. Thanks for the view of the neighborhood.

This plane was a little late for myfather but the fact that it has the USS Lexington on the tail was surprise for me. that was one of the aircraft carriers my father was assigned to from 1944 to 1945. Youse guys are always doing interesting things. Those planes are beautiful. Having just seen Top Gun Maverick, I was particularly interested in the Navy plane – so funny to be a pilot for the navy, feels like an oxymoron!

Impressive shots, John! I had no idea that some planes could deploy a parachute. My son and I were at the Nascar race in Sonoma yesterday (the first time), and there were some great flyovers.

This tour was Top Gun coolness, Sheriff. And the chorizo cream gravy with biscuits and scrambled eggs would be a whole week’s worth of cheat day for me. But hey, that’s what Sundays are for, right?

You must have been over the moon! Hubby accidentally bumped into his old F-4 Phantom on the grounds of the Naval Academy and nearly fainted with excitement. I’m so glad you saw that aircraft with the Lexington on the tail, John.
