Thursday – A Little Personal – Overcast Day with Twiggy and Lucy

“Hey, Lucy. Where you going?”

“To the patio to catch some rays.”

“Do you happen to take a look at your shadow?”

“Shadow. What shadow?”

That’s what I mean. No sun.”

“Yeah, but a nice laydown would feel good.”

“The laydown didn’t work out, huh?”

“You were right about the sun. Where did it go?”

“Saharian dust, I’m afraid.”

“Saharian dust? What the heck is Saharian dust.”

“You know you could listen to the evening news instead of snoring out after dinner.”

“Just tell me.”

“Okay, dust from the Saharian desert blows over Texas every June and July.”

“So what happens to the sun?”

“It gets blocked. So, it is like a cloudy day only dust-filled.”

“I never paid attention. But, hey, look over there. Some sun coming through the windows.”

“If you can wait until tomorrow, the wind will change, and the dust will be blown out.”

“What’s wrong with the little bit of sun now?”

“Well, nothing, I suppose. It’s going to be in and out, though.”

“Look, I can see your shadow.”

“Maybe there will be six more weeks of Saharian dust then.”

  1. When we can’t get any clouds, that dust is the next best thing. It takes anyway the girls’ shadows, but it gives us great sunsets, and helps to keep storms at bay. I’ll be glad when it’s gone, though.

  2. I can’t believe I doubted you. I had to look it it up. You were 100% right. Almost fascinating 😀
My 7 year old had a ballgame last night. Temperature almost 100 with high winds. I was actually covered in dust ( I sit right behind the backstop to yell at kids – I don’t yell I offer advice)
I think we lost. Couldn’t see through the Chicago Dust

  3. If Twiggy had been my history teacher, I might have learned something! Saharian Dust? This is a first for me. In our area, we just get overcast skies from forest fires, which sadly happen far too often. Loved the post, John. 😊

  4. That Saharan dust is amazing, isn’t it? On Monday, when we drove along I-10 towards San Antonion, there was a haze in the distance as I’ve rarely seen any before.

  5. In fact, too many things in life come to two essential points: the shade & the sun. Especially when it deals with the Twiggy Resort’s great seasons. 🙂 🙂 🙂 Lucy is amazing in her philosophical glory, dear John. 🍤🍸

  6. Twiggy gives new meaning to the term ‘news-hound’! Every so often, we too get that dust, making it a challenge for those with allergies to breathe. Here’s hoping it blows away soon!

  7. “Six more weeks of Saharin dust” – too funny! I hope not, but it has kept storms from forming and makes beautiful sunsets and sunrises. We need some rain to settle all dust. Corpus Christi and Portland just went into Stage I water restrictions.

  8. That dust is tough, and so is the temps you all have been getting. My friend in Austin (who lived for years in the SF Bay area) is suffering. May you all soon see your shadows.

  9. Wow. That’s wild that a huge dust cloud from Africa reaches Texas. Thanks for this educational (for me) post, John. Maybe I should pay more attention to what ‘s going on in the world.

  10. “Yeah, but a nice laydown would feel good.” I’m all in, as they say in Alcoholics Anonymous.

it’s 88 degrees here in the Big Apple, Speedo weather if you were a preening Parisian on the beach. Lucy and Twiggy are so lucky they don’t have the problem of what to wear in these heated climes Ah,,,Au naturale must feel pretty good. 🙂

  11. I read somewhere that breathing Saharian dust can be dangerous. Do you have days of it at a time, or is it more like a one-day event?

  12. I did not know about the Saharian dust. Off and on all of June and July? Bummer. Well every place has it’s plusses and minuses. Like 2 feet of snow in February.

  13. Hahaha! 6 more weeks of S. dust…
Appears, in the sun momentarily, that Lucy and Twiggy are groundhog dogs.
I’d like to mention to L & T… get cabana boy to buy you guys a camera! Cloudy days are the best for taking pics.

  14. Hi John, you would have laughed at the conversation your post elicited in my house. I said to hubby, “Is there a Sahara Desert in America?” He looked at his incredibly stupid wife who lives in Africa and thus should know that the Sahara Desert is in North Africa. “No,’ he says, the Sahara Desert is in North Africa. “Yes, I know that,” I say, “but my friend John says that there is Saharan dust in Texas.” “No way,” all three of my men say in unison. So we look it up, and guess what? Dust from the Sahara Desert reaches all the way to Texas at this time of the year. Who knew! Thanks, John, for a riveting discussion and a most interesting new piece of information.
