Views of the Neighborhood – Chinese New Year Dragons

Today we will participate in a Chinese New Year celebration with dragons. The dragon show is being performed by the Texas Dragon/Lion Dance team. We are being catered by the sponsoring Asian restaurant Sakura of Lakeway. Our entertainment is Peter, Paul, and Mary.

Menu

Creamy Vegetarian – Vegetable broth, fried tofu, wood ear mushroom, bamboo shoot, bok choy, sweet corn, and spring mix.

Rice Bowl – Served with choice of soup: miso, egg drop soup, or hot and sour soup, steamed rice, stir-fried broccoli, snow pea, cabbage, and carrot over steamed rice, pan-fried egg, teriyaki sauce, scallions, and sesame.

Twice Cooked Fish – Sauteed lightly fried fish fillet, snow pea, asparagus, green and red bell pepper, onion, and special spicy sauce. Served with steamed rice.

Mongolian Beef – Served with steamed rice.

General Tso’s Tofu – Served with steamed rice.

Kung Pao Chicken – Served with steamed rice.

High kick.

Well, that was the show. Time to listen to the music and enjoy the food. I hope you have a great week.

  1. Looks like a fun celebration. It’s wonderful that Chinese New Year is celebrated all over the world. Thanks for Puff the Magic Dragon. Always brings a tear. Nostalgia I guess or lost youth perhaps. I did get to see Peter, Paul and Mary perform this a few years back. They were much older but still did a good job of singing this timeless classic.

    1. Paul went to my high school and the trio did a concert after I graduated and brought the house down. They were the best.

  2. I’ll take the shrimp to go and a spot on the curb to enjoy the parade. By the way, being a dragon looks like a good workout.

  4. Cool display. I’ve seen some really big new years dragons on tv. The head has to be tough to maneuver.

  15. Fascinating to me that Chinese New Year is celebrated in your town, John. I do acknowledge it in my own way. Sometimes my butt is dragon, but a second cup of coffee will get me in gear. 🙂

  18. I’ve often wondered if Puff the Magic Dragon was an oblique reference to partaking of some wacky backy.. I used to love it as a kid, but those were innocent times- at least for me

    1. Yeah, I don’t think there is any evidence that it is. Green Tamborine is definitely in that genre.

  20. Thanks for taking us behind the scenes for these dragons. Very colorful and planned. We don’t see much of that down here. There was a barefoot Mardi Gras on the beach recently and colorful from the photos I saw. Perfect music!

I might have overdone it with the Mango rolls but that’s alright . . . worth it!

I got to see this in Chinatown many moons ago and it’s just so much fun. It’s frenetic and colorful, really nothing like it.

    Great tour as per Sheriff.
