Today we are going to cruise the neighborhood. I want to show you two things. The first is to give you an idea of the topography and house placement in Lakewat. The second is to show how some folks use abundant rocks. We are catered by Quantos Tacos Foodtruck of Austin. (Mexico City Street food). Our entertainment is Alabama.

The bus is packed. Let’s go.

This is a long uphill driveway.

This shows that houses are placed down the hill from the street.

This will give you an idea of the hilliness of the area.

This street goes steadily downhill. Houses in the hills too.

Because houses are arranged with either big back or front yards but not both, some folks have to place their pools in the front with a street view.

Another pool view from the street.

Cute little rock wall.

Random rocks pretty much left where they were found.

More substantial rock wall.

Fieldstone laid into a wall reminds me of the walls in the Eastern states.

Big ole dump of rock to keep the hill where it is.

Use of big rocks to retain the soil.
I hope you enjoyed the views and have some idea of our town’s topography. Now let’s enjoy the food and music. I hope you have a great week.

Some grand homes! Alabama is always so uplifting.

Wonder if the front yard pool thing gets awkward. I canβt help think about flooding when I see things are downhill too. Probably due to the warnings we have right now.

Most folks never concern themselves with the downhill stuff until we had a couple of ice storms. I would think the pool thing would be awkward.

My hat is off to people who can build natural rock walls. I watched a documentary on rock walls, and it takes knowledge and skill as well as strength!

Beautiful photos, John. I hadn’t thought of terrain until your post. The rock walls take me back to upstate NY and CT, where I spent many years. As for front yard swimming pools, that’s a first for me – but it makes sense in your area. Enjoy your day – hopefully, you’ll have mild temps. π

We are slated for a cooler day today. Only 103. Might have to find my gloves. The walls reminded me of Connecticut too. We had one running along the rear of our house. A neighbor who studied such things said it was probably built in the 1700s. Loved that wall.

Looks like one of those areas where you need dynamite to put the foundation in, let alone a pool.

Yeah pretty close. They have these jack hammer kinds of things. If you noticed the pools are above grad for the most part. Digging down is very expensive to go very far.

I didn’t realize that your area is so hilly. Thank you for showing us another perspective.

It is quite hilly. We more or less don’t realize it either.

Hillier than I imagined you’d find in Texas, John. Not quite Pittsburgh or West Virginia, but certainly not flat.
I’m not a fan of cilantro, so I’ll go with the Cachete Quesadilla.

Sounds like a good choice. π

Great use of rocks – always a good landscaping alternative! I will have the champion quesadilla and eat it while listening to Alabama. Sweet Home Alabama!

Yum…you had me at tacos! Interesting to see a pool in the front yard. Guess the nude swimming is kept to a minimum when the pool is on the street side. π

I’ll bet you are right. We had a pool back in California and nude swimming was the best part.

Some lovely homes there, John. And as for the rocks … well, when life gives you rocks, build a wall! Thanks for the tour!

Good philosophical lesson, Jill. I, of course think of rocks in my drink.

John, I’m a self-proclaimed rock geek. I love gemstones and just plain old rocks. So I enjoyed this a lot. It’s a beautiful area. Excuse me though. I have to go amend my grocery order. I have a sudden craving for tacos! Hugs.

Nice, John. The hills add character to the area. Steep driveways can be a situation in the winter, though. Have a good week.

Yeah, I wasn’t taking that you’re in Texas into consideration. I’m a Michigander so that came to mind automatically. π

When I first moved to Texas I came from California so I still didn’t think of the snow and Ice. I sure asked about tons of water during a rain stormrunning down those drives straight into the garage.

Are you suffering from excess heat just now? The news loves a weather story so heat in the states like heat in southern Europe has been a constant.

We are. We’ve had 11 days at or above 38 degrees C and see another ten near 41 C on the horizon. No telling when it will stop. It is very unusual.

Not sure I’d want a pool in my front yard, John. It kind of defeats the purpose of privacy, don’t you think? Still, I would imagine pools are quite popular in your area, especially since the temperatures have been so unbearably hot!

I don’t think I would want one in front either. Thanks, Debbie

Alabama had quite a following in their day. Your neighborhood has a unique layout. Pools in the front yard, eh? Thatβs different. Still hot and dry?

You live in a lovely area.
It reminds me of the prairies, where I grew up; sunny skies and lots of space.
Difference is that the cruel winter winds & snow caused people to build small 1 story homes that are very close together. There’s warmth in the huddle.
Hey, your new header is great. Fabulous!

With all those hills you have a great neighborhood to walk in, John. Those walls reminded me of some my dad built at the house I grew up in. He even made a whole patio out of them.
