For those who follow this blog, you know it has been hot here in Texas. In fact, I’ve talked too much about it. One item I haven’t mentioned is the deer. As you can imagine, the deer need water sources with all the heat. Today, we are taking a tour to see what folks are doing to supply deer water. We are catered by Cypress Cajun.
Grill of Austin. Our entertainment is Brad Paisley.

Let’s go
An excellent stainless steel pan makes a good watering place.
A horse bucket does the trick.
Here is a doe leaving a Home Depot bucket.
Another Home Depot bucket. It’s not the best choice since Bucks can get their antlers stuck if the water level is low.
Speaking of Bucks. Here is a thirsty one in the sun’s glare.
Ah yes. A long, cool drink.
Another type of bucket.
A little blue one.
A tub and a hose.
That ends our tour. Time for food and music. I hope you have a great week.
It’s like another Friday story. Very happy to hear your neighbors are joining in on helping the wildlife!
I can’t decided between the the Spanky Special and the Eggs Napoleon – any suggestions?
I’m happy to see the neighbors are doing their part to keep the deer hydrated. That’s wonderful, John. Thanks for sharing this. Wishing the Howell household a peaceful and cool Sunday.
I can’t get over all the deer in your neighborhood. Nary a one around here, sadly. I’d put buckets all over the place, and salt licks, and anything else that might make them happy. And your photograph of the buck in the sun’s glare is stunning!
Thanks so much for sharing, John. And bless all these good folks in your neighborhood! 😀 ❤
We’ve got water bowls galore spread around our complex, too. We don’t have deer, but there’s no question the raccoons, possums, and birds appreciate them. Last week, a yellow-crowned night heron was spotted standing on the steps leading down into the community pool!
I’ve always read about people upset that the deer are eating their flowers/plants. This warms my heart (bad pun, John) that people are taking care of the deer by providing them sources of water.
We love our deer. Most people understand that plants have to be somewhat deer proof. There is plenty for them to eat otherwise. The herd is very healthy as evidenced by the number of twin fawns this year.
First off: I would love the eggs Napoleon. What a great sounding dish.
In our area (homeowners assoc.) we are not allowed to even grow tomatoes or anything. Why? It attracts little animals. They attract larger animals who attract larger animals. Then coyotes show up and it isn’t pretty. Fortunately we do have deer go through our yard on occasion.
We love watching them but no way can we put out water or salt licks. Ahhh the joy of living in a “controlled” environment.
I’ll go for the Cajun Hash. And I’ll take Brad Paisley anytime. He is so much fun.
As for the deer, I cannot tell you how much I love this. Taking care of the planet, one bucket at a time.
Dan talks about leaving water out for the birds in this heat. I think when we all help out, we can make a difference. Mind you. I am, at this time, fighting with a groundhog that think it owns the area under my deck… I am NOT too friendly with it.
Very humane that you’re taking care of the poor critters, John. We might be able to go for awhile without food, but we all need water. Here, we’re more concerned about leaving standing water out and attracting mosquitoes!
I’m so glad the deer are getting water in all that heat. It’s wonderful to see people putting out buckets and other sources for them. Thanks for the smiles, John! 🙂
This is as good as one of your feel good Friday stories, John! I am so happy to see humans caring and sharing! We keep a birdbath full in the back yard. Birds and other critters drink there. I’ll have the loaded biscuit, please, and thank you!
I’m so happy your community has water out for the dear deer.
One of those kiddie wading pools would be great… I mean with the antlers and all.
I’m too hot to eat.
I keep worrying about wildlife during the climate changes – fires and floods and what’s next?
Right… record cold winter in Texas.
Here they are predicting a return to normal winter for 23-24. -40c here we come.
However, we are prepared for it, and used to it.
Like you say dear John….. as long as the grid holds out!
❄️🐂🐂🔥
We have a big [50 gallon] trough with water in the backyard for the deer, and it might well be that because of that we have so many around. They also use the bird baths.
When will that drought end???
That is so beautiful that folks take care of the wild life, especially in the heat. Lovely bucket tour John. And I have to say the amount of food in those dishes is astounding! 🙂
I am pleased people are helping the deer 🌺

The poor things normally have flowing streams but this drought has put a damper on natural. Good choice on the Cajun hash.
