Views of the Neighborhood – Earth Day Planting

In celebration of Earth Day last Monday, the Swim Center and the Department of Parks and Recreation of Lakeway held a planting event. Volunteers signed up to plant blooming plants throughout the center. So, we will step back in time and witness the event. We are catered by the 24 Diner of Austin, and our entertainment is The Beetles.

Picture of an old time school bus

Jump on the bus, and let’s go.

There is the entrance to the park.

The Parks and Recreation table so we know we are in the right place.

The plants were all laid out ahead of time. Here’s a hibiscus ready to be planted.

More plants are laid out in a bed.

More.

Here is a bed that has roses but is going to get company.

The volunteers get briefed.

And so to work. Hibiscus and lantana are being put in.

All ages are participating.

Lots of ground to cover.

The boss seems pleased.

The hibiscus we saw earlier is getting settled.

Everyone is pitching in.

It is time for us to enjoy the food and music. I know you’ve worked hard, and you need to relax. I hope you have a great week.

  1. I put my order in for the patty melt and hopped on the bus. I think it’s great that so many from the community pitches in to help! This basically another good new post!

    1. I had a problem finding a song that would fit. There are not too many that focus on just flowers. The one by Miley Cyrus didn’t fit and the Cowsills I have played before. I’m glad you liked it, Darlene.

  2. The tuna, please, while I mentally help all those volunteers with their planting. What a fantastic community project. Kudos to Lakeway.

Still trying to figure out how I can get Here Comes the Sun as my ringtone.

  3. What a great community project! By any chance, are they available for work around residence lawns — I’m referring to my little piece of property, of course. I could surely use their help!!

  4. Great song for the season, John. Looks like a lot of work going into making Mother Nature proud.

I was thinking about that veggie burger, but I’m going to go with the meatloaf sandwich. That’s pretty hard to ignore.

I hope you have a good week.

  6. This is such a brilliant idea. Save money by getting the citizens to participate which, at the same times, increases their sense of community. I so love your town, John.

  7. Great idea to have the plants already in place and ready for planting and having volunteers involved. And they can come back and see how “their” plants are doing. Thanks for the food and “Sun.” Haven’t had much here lately.

  8. Veggie burger, please, and light on the onions. They give me gas. The Beatles have a song for every occasion, don’t they? So much can get done when a group pitches in to do it. Great project! Oh, would love some grilled mushrooms with that burger.
