Thursday – A Little Personal – Twiggy Welcomes Tempeste Home From the Vet

“Twiggy, wake up. Mom is heading this way with Tempeste.”

“Muufff. Oh, good.”

“They will be here pretty soon, so we want to be ready for them.”

“What did Tempeste have done?”

“Well, she has had Stenotic Nares Correction surgery and a spay.

“I know what spay is, but what is that other thing?”

“Her nostrils are pinched, so she had to have surgery to correct that so she can breathe freely.”

“I never noticed that she had a problem.”

“It is better to care for it now that she is young than to wait until there is trouble.”

“How about my nostrils? Are they okay?”

“Yes, yours are okay. You were checked out long ago.”

“That’s good. Hey, I hear something.”

“That is mom pulling in the garage.”

“I can’t wait to see if Tempest is okay.”

“How you doing Tempeste. I was worried.”

“I’m real tired. Plus, I have to wear this stupid cone.”

“That is to protect you from hurting yourself. Your nose looks good.”

“Thanks, I think. You know this bed is not big enough for the cone and me.”

“Mom brought you a bigger bed. How does that feel?”

“Oh, much better. I really need to take a nap.”

“Yes, you need to get some rest. Trust me, you will feel better tomorrow.”

“The nose thing I get, but what is a spay anyway?”

“We’ll talk later. But for now, know that you’ll be glad you have it. I know I am.”

Since her nose is sensitive she may have to wear it for two weeks. We are appealing to the Supreme Court.

Yah, that ‘spay thing’ is something to be thankful for. Was this a common surgery for the type of dog?

Since Tempeste is a rescue from a backyard breeder situation some of the worse traits of Frenchies have been passed on. The restricted nasal passage and elongated pallet are two such traits. Tempest has both and will need another surgery for the pallet. We didn’t feel our current vet had enough experience on the pallet so we are going to a specialist for that. This is the sad part of breeders who are not professional. Thanks, Steve.

Unfortunately, there are too many ‘backyard breeders’. Temperate is fortunate to have been adopted by a very caring couple, you and the Producer.

Poor little puppy. Surgery is rough and then you have to walk around like an upside down lamp. We should use cones people though, especially with stitching. Seen too many scratch at and pop them.

I think it’s the right thing to do, having her stenotic nares taken care of when she’s spayed. The cone will keep her from breaking open her nares, letting them heal completely from the surgery.

Oh, the dreaded cone. Good way for Nurse Twiggy to buy time about the spay thing.

When one of my cats had to wear that cone after surgery, she cracked me up the way she would center that cone around her food bowl to eat. If it was the Cat Cone Olympics, I would have given her a 10. I hope the time flies by for little Tempeste.

I didn’t know that the nares could be a problem. We had to deal with eyelids being turned in and irritating the eye.

I’ll spare you the grinding tale (6 hr. ordeal) , but I left with tears in my eyes, couldn’t see properly, tripped on a chunk of sticking up sidewalk, fell, scab on my knee is finally getting smaller, sprained my wrist (almost better), and wrenched my back out.

I’m never going back. I still want a cat.
