Today, since it has been a quiet week here in Lakeway, we are doing a potpourri. We are catered by Hestia of Austin, and our entertainment is Jack Antonoff and Oscar the Grouch.
Menu
Smoked mushroom – mushroom tare, fermented turnip, Fresno chili
Halibut – shiro dashi, beurre monte, corn, trout roe
Red ranger chicken – peach lacquer, fermented gooseberry, radicchio
Berkshire pork chop – charred shishito peppers, fermented green tomatoes, fried eggplant
Texas wagyu bavette – mole negro, oregano beef tallow
30-day aged Texas wagyu ribeye – grilled spring onion, okra, fermented green peaches

Lets go

Let’s start in our garden. A shot of the most temperamental Hibiscus on the planet.

Vincas are thriving.

White Begonia is holding up too.

Red Begonia is still kicking.

Basil on the left and a chive parsley combo on the right.

We had some fun trash this week. Looks like the kid is growing up

Grandpa has finally gone home, so it’s time to redo the bathroom. It might be time to get rid of the vehicles, too.

It looks like the chairs, bookcase, desk, and ironing board have outlived their usefulness and aren’t invited to the new house.

Either an Iranian Drone went off course, or a very hungover driver this morning. Either way, the mailbox came out second.

A lovely mailbox topper.

A unique piece of metal art. Dog and golf ball.

We’ll leave with a shot of the lonely chair no one wants (awwww).
Time to relax with the food and entertainment. I hope you have a good week. So you know, I will be taking a blog break Friday through next Thursday.

Dear John
My entire furniture came from the bulky waste when I was a student. Looking for good stuff at the bulky waste was the highlight of my night.
Wishing you a happy week

I think we all did that, Klausbernd. Still wonder why we would haul a used couch from the waste site (Fleas and all)

Dear John
We didn’t have couches. That was too bourgeois.
Well, those were the times. Couches came into our house with Hanne-Dina about 15 years ago.

Lakeway seems to have a rest during the hotter days of the year. Pulling waste out of the house is the best to do. Have a nice Sunday, John! Best wishes, Michael

That pork chop sounds interesting. Too bad I can’t get my hands on that old hope chest, it looks in good shape. I love that golfing dog.
I’m happy your plants are able to survive the weather!

I agree on the pork chop. I like the golfing dog too. Very creative. Thanks, GP

I had to throw my hibiscus plant away. It was hard to do but it had to go. Little white bugs took over and I couldn’t get rid of them no matter what I did. Sigh.

It likes to drop buds and refuses to quit doing that.

I’m just beside myself. If I’d been there with a truck and a couple of strong friends, that cedar chest would have come home with me. I can’t even imagine anyone getting rid of one of those gems!

I know about the chest. I can’t figure out why it lasted till the trash pick-up.

I would love to have come across what looks like a classic Lane Cedar Chest. My parents used to have one. They were giving out miniature cedar chests to high school graduating seniors when I graduated and that is the about the only thing I regret not making an effort to procure.

Well, sadly, it is in the landfill now.

I did see where some old ones can be found for sale.

I know some undergrads who would have a grand time sorting through the discards! Halibut please!

Yes they would have fun for sure. Just for the Halibut.

Your basil plant is beautiful, John! Is that String of Pearls with your red begonia?
You have some wonderful trash. We have to wait for the once-a-year mayor’s clean up to see stuff like this on the curb. **cue the drive-by scavengers** 😂

I think that’s what it is. Thanks, Lois.

I love Hibiscus, but I haven’t tried growing one in years. This would’ve been an ideal summer for it — hot and muggy. I love the dog and golf ball, too, but that white thing with the lions looks more like a cremation urn. Enjoy your blog break, my friend! (Prayers continuing for wee Twiggy!)

Twiggy is doing okay, Debbie. We have the Neurologist appointment on Tuesday. Hopefully, we will know more after that.

Looks like I’ll have another chance to wish you a good break, but I’m still on one, so I may miss posts before Friday.
I’ll get the food order out of the way (I’m hungry). I’ll have the pork chop – charred shishito peppers, fermented green tomatoes, fried eggplant – that all sounds good to me
If I’m not mistaken, that’s a Lane Cedar Chest, and could be a nice addition to the foot of someone’s bed. Those things are practically indestructible.

Love your potpourri, John. I thought the golfing statue was a moose at first! Wonder how many people drive by the day before garbage day to pick up still good stuff!
Vacation for you, too, eh? 🙂

Our trash doesn’t seem to attract many drive-bys. The photos were taken on Tuesday, and the stuff was still there on Thursday. Yes, I need some time off.

A very nice potpourri of views around the neighborhood starting with your garden, which brings me to the fact that we started doing raised bed gardening today I bought a couple of raised garden beds from Amazon and assembled them, and yesterday we bought the dirt, and today we poured the dirt and did the first planting.

A quiet weekend for a change in Lakeway. I always think it’s weird when people stick out random furniture in their yard, but it’s better for someone else to use it than for it to end up in a landfill.

So true, Pete. Unfortunately, all this stuff probably ended up in a landfill.

This was fun, John. Does the town pick up what people leave on the curb, or are those items ‘for the taking?’
LikeLiked by 1 person
The town does pick up everything. If people can get to the items before pickup, then they can have them.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Ah, that’s a good plan. There must be people scouring the neighborhood before the pickup.

This really WAS a potpourri of goodness, Sheriff.
The colors are still coloring, which is a great thing considering as how this oppressive heat has taken the color out of just about everything. It’s been a hawt couple of months for sure.
Shame about that desk, it’s a beauty!
Great food, great tour and great tune to cap things off.

I grow basil every year, but this is the first year I had plants come up from seed. Even more surprising is one came up right along the edge of the driveway where I’ve never planted basil, and it’s probably the healthiest of all.
