Top Ten Things Not to Do While Trying to Attract Other Authors to do a Top Ten List
Here is the 55th installment of Ten Top Lists of What Not to Do. I decided to publish this list in case anyone wants to do a Top Ten you will at least know some thought has been put in how to behave. Top Ten Things Not to Do While Trying to Lure Attract Other Authors to do a Top Ten List
10. If you are trying to attract other authors for a top ten-guest appearance, do not make them believe they will become rich and famous. If you do, at best they will overlook the one “like” and still speak to you. At worst, they could find a way to troll your blog for the rest of your life.
9. If you are trying to attract other authors for a top ten-guest appearance, do not try to write a top ten list for them. If you do, at best you will probably include information which makes no sense. At worst, you might unintentionally include embarrassing information which the author had no idea you knew and which will put you on the author’s hate list for all time.
8. If you are trying to attract other authors for a top ten-guest appearance, do not lead them to believe it is easy. If you do, at best you may never get the author to guest blog again. At worst, you may find some unpleasant e-mails from your previous colleague requesting you to place your list where the sun doesn’t shine.
7. If you are trying to attract other authors for a top ten-guest appearance, do not think you won’t need a post for that day. If you do, at best you will be scrambling to put together something at the last minute. At worst, you will publish an incoherent post that is so off the mark you’ll want to enroll in a witness protection program and will be willing to commit a crime to do so.
6. If you are trying to attract other authors for a top ten-guest appearance, do not force the subject. If you do at best you may end up with a top ten list of nothing. At worst you will no doubt antagonize your readers with the crap produced and will have made an enemy for life of the author.
5. If you are trying to attract other authors for a top ten-guest appearance, do not insist on running your own media. If you do, at best your media will have absolutely no tie in to the list. At worst you will have the pleasure of enjoying your media selection alone which is a state that may turn out to be permanent.
4. If you are trying to attract other authors for a top ten-guest appearance, do not set up a set of pre-publish rules that may be impossible to follow. If you do, at best you may find yourself listless on Monday. At worst, you may cause what has been a lovely relationship with the author to degenerate into twelve paces at dawn and you don’t know how to fire a flintlock pistol.
3. If you are trying to attract other authors for a top ten-guest appearance, do not promise food or money for participation. If you do, at best you will need to figure out a way to select the best lists. At worst, you may be put in a position of turning down beautiful lists due to the fact that you have run out of money and food turning those you don’t accept into lifelong Voo Doo practitioners.
2. If you are trying to attract other authors for a top ten-guest appearance, do not offer to guest post on their blog in return. If you do, at best you might get a nibble or two. At worst, you will be listening to the crickets for a long time since none of those offered really want you to guest post.

Friday JohnKu – TGIF
Friday finally. Hope your week was a good one. I was sorry to see both daughter and granddaughter leave and as usual the visit was way too short. All is back to normal and the house is quiet again. Can’t say this is a good thing, but it is what normal sounds like. I suppose if the two lived here full-time I would be happy to see them take a trip. All I can do is watch the airplane lift off and look forward to the next time. Daughter did leave the grand dog with us as she takes care of some travels where dogs aren’t welcome. I know she will be back soon. Granddaughter is going off to Mexico for a year. I know she won’t have the opportunity to return for at least that length of time. This week’s JohnKu (term coined by Words4jp) reflects a bit of lonely.

Book review: My GRL by John Howell

I am a serious boat person and love crime fiction so this book had me intrigued from the start. John J. Cannon is an average Joe, an attorney, trying to escape the stress of the Courtroom and office, when he heads to the Texas coast and buys a yacht from a broker who is not entirely on the up and up with him. She ends up dead. Poor John, absorbed with minutia and afflicted with OCD, gets sucked into the middle of a criminal catastrophe. There is one dilemma after another placed in front of him.
This is only the second book I have read that is written in present tense, so it took some adjustment. It is also written in first person, which I felt allowed me to get really close to the protagonist. He’s an endearing fellow who tries to make all that’s going wrong right, trying to…

Wednesday Story Day AKA Hump Day
Wednesday is upon us again. I have a feeling since it is the Wednesday after the Fourth of July holiday the week has been moving faster for some reason. I think it is because my granddaughter is visiting me from Indiana. You know how time flies when you are having a good time. So it is with this visit. She is sixteen and a real joy. She will be an exchange student in the fall and it is exciting to see how well her life is developing. I have to give full credit to her mom and dad. They are hands on parents and it really shows. My youngest daughter is visiting at the same time so the house is full of chatter and laughter. Daughter’s life is developing well also. She is a fraud analyst working for a start-up company. Okay, I’ll take part of the credit.
The Fourth of July weekend was the inspiration for the story today. There were so many people and so much trash. You would think none of these folks had the kind of parents who would teach them to behave as if they are human rather than a sty dweller. The story is titled Trash. I hope you like it. Yes, Frank is in it so we know there is a problem right away.

“Look at that ass throwing the beer cans in the water.”
“I see him. Do you know him?”
“Nope. I can tell he is from San Antonio though.”
“How can you tell that?”
“Can’t you see the GO SPURs on his wife beater shirt?”
“Yeah, I can.”
“Also he has more beer in a HEB store plastic bag in his hand. Dead tip-off.”
“Should we say anything? I hate that littering.”
“Yeah, you stay here. I’ll go see what he thinks he’s doing. Hey fella.”
“You talkn’ to me.”
“Yeah, I’m talking to you. I was wondering why you were throwing the beer cans into the water.”
“They’re trash man. I’m throwing them away.”
“How about that trash barrel that is oh maybe ten steps away.”
“You got a problem?”
“I don’t like litter on the beach.”
“Well then that’s your problem.”
“Pick it up.”
“Make me.”
“What’s your name?”
“Gerry. What’s yours?”
“Frank.”
“Why do you want to know my name?”
“I always like to know who I’m killing with this here 9MM. Bye Gerry.”

Great review by the author of the Scrolls of Sion T.J. Therien
For me, there are books that beg to be dissected and there are books that beg the reader to strap in, sit back and enjoy the ride. “My GRL” by John W. Howell (John’s Blog:https://johnwhowell.com/) is one of those second books. The problems I had with the book were with my own pet peeves and do not reflect the author, story, or the writing itself, so they do not bare mentioning other than to say I would have found the same faults in almost any book that is written in the first person. I should mention I am also not a particular fan of mysteries to begin with. My pet peeves and personal preferences aside, I believe the author did a masterful job weaving his story.
