Watch Tiny Dog Sprint After Coyote While His Puppy Pal is Being Attacked in the Backyard

In California, a little dog was saved from a prowling coyote when his friend, 10 lbs. Maltese, “hero in a fur suit,” summoned all his wolfish instincts to chase the predator out of his yard.

It happened in a flash, just 10 seconds, as Erin Macaluso recounted on Facebook.

Coming back from a nighttime walk, she and her husband forgot to put the cover on the doggie door.

“We are super vigilant dog owners,” she wrote. “Unfortunately, on this one night, we had just taken the dogs out to go potty and forgot to put the cover on the doggie door.”

A coyote slipped through the bars of the metal fence, and, hearing his intrusion, Macaluso’s two dogs quietly went outside to investigate the noise.

They were a 12-pound Morkie, which is a mix between a Maltese and a Yorkshire terrier named Harley, and Vinny, an 11-year-old Maltese with just three teeth.

Californians lose hundreds of pets every year to coyote attacks. With few larger predators to keep their numbers in check, they regularly roam directly into urban and suburban areas to snatch cats and dogs.

In a video posted on Facebook, security camera footage shows a little dog immediately being chased around the yard by a coyote while another beast lurks beyond the fence. Then, a white knight bolts from the house towards the coyote and scares it away.

“Our little HERO Vinny is 10 lbs, 11 yrs old, and only has 3 teeth! But he’s always been scrappy,” wrote Macaluso in celebration of her tiny dog. In the post, she encourages pet owners to never let their guard down. She claims to have lived in the town of Mission Viejo, California, for 30 years without ever seeing a coyote in the yard.

If that’s true, the one time she left the doggie door unlocked, the coyotes were ready to pounce.

Harley, the dog suffered major injuries but will make a full recovery, the vets said.

The good news here is a foreceful attitude in times of trouble can go a long way even if you are the smallest. Today’s JohnKu talks about action. I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Thursday – A Little Personal – Twiggy and Lucy Visit No Dog’s Land

“Lucy. What are we doing back here in no dog’s land?”

“I thought we should get out more and see new things.”

“Yeah, but we never come to this part of the yard.”

“You have to ask yourself why.”

“No, I don’t. I know why.

“Okay, want to fill me in?”

“This part of the yard is filled with nothing but ghosts.”

“Ghosts? Listen to yourself. There’s no such thing as ghosts.”

“You can believe that if you want to, but I know different.”

“You do, eh? Well, tell me what you know.”

“Late at night, when no one is around, I see a weird light back there.”

“Weird light? Oh, you must mean the camera.”

“Camera? What the heck is a camera doing back there?”

“It’s a security camera for the gate back there. The light comes on when there is movement.”

“Ah ha. And just what moves in the middle of the night?”

“The wind blows the trees, and they move. The camera reacts to the trees.”

“So you are saying there is nothing else causing the light to come on.”

“That is what I’m saying.  Ask mom if you don’t believe me.”

“I wonder if mom ever saw a ghost on the camera?”

“Oh that would be a good question to ask her. I think your answer would be a fast trip to the feelings doctor.”

“Still wouldn’t it be great if she got an image of one.”

“You’ll never know till you ask. By the way keep me out of it.”

Tuesday – Anything Possible – Finger Point Prompt – Claims

The idea of a finger-point prompt is to open a book at a random place and, without looking, point to the page. The word or words closest to the pointing finger becomes the prompt. For example, today, I opened The Last Drive to page 151. The word closest to the pointing finger is “claims.”

Claims by John W. Howell © 2023

“Her father was a no count. Claims he has a bad back.”

“What are you doing?”

“Singing a song.”

“I can’t get the tune, but the words sound familiar.”

“Polk Salad, Annie.”

“Could have fooled me. I thought you were singing “Ring of Fire.”

“The words don’t match.”

“Well, your tune is one I never heard connected to the song.”

“I guess I have a tin ear.”

“The man claims to cover his music ineptitude.”

“By the way. I was very happy here by myself.”

“I’ll bet. I just came from the insurance office.”

“What were you doing there?”

“Had a couple of claims to sign.”

“What kind of claims?”

“Remenber that guy who backed into my car.”

“Yeah. That is one claim.”

“The guy behind me had damage when my car hit his.”

“Oh. I didn’t know. Makes sense there would be two claims.”

“Three.”

“Three? How.”

“The guy behind the guy behind me.”

“You are making my head hurt. Is everything okay?”

“Yup. Everyone is happy.”

“That’s good. Well, I’m off to get lunch.”

“Oh yeah? Where you going?”

“To the clam shack to stake my claims on some clams.”

“”I think we are done here.”

“I hope.”

Views of the Neighborhood – Looking for Blooms

Today we are going to cruise the neighborhood looking for anything blooming. It is still a little early for the crape myrtles to be fully out, but maybe we can catch a glimpse of some early bloomers. We are being catered by Salt Lick BBQ of Driftwood, TX. Our entertainment is The Turtles.

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt – Sink/Sank/Sunk

A picture of a string with drops of water- the logo for SoCS

The soft whirr of beans meeting blades is followed by the olfactory stimulation that only coffee can produce before hitting the cup in a consumable form. The steady flow of the intoxicating liquid is finished with a cap of crema that only a machine with instrument DNA can produce. There it is. My route to survival. A sip confirms the road ahead will be paved with good intentions, a big ole smile, and a few sinkholes.

As the chimes awake the heretofore sleeping dogs, my eye goes to the small sign on the counter that reads, PLEASE DO NOT RING THE DOORBELL. Another day of a forgotten install above the doorbell sank the quiet and is rewarded with the sound of a pack of wolves chasing a panicked elk through a forest of aluminum trees. As the Westminster chime drones through its complete cycle, the din of the mayhem reaches the acme of volume somewhere in a decibel range of eardrum bleed.

A handful of treats tossed into the next room brings the sound of silence to the entryway. Moving through the security system bypass allows the front door to be thrown open. Standing there is a mob character in a pin-striped suit right out of central casting. The only detail missing is the violin case hiding the Thomson submachine gun. My hopes have sunk to a new low when he mentions the boss would like a conversation. “Who’s the boss?” comes out of my mouth before a reasonable edit.

“Yeah, I liked dat show. Now quit fooling around and come wit me.”

Not wanting to go with the gentleman, an excuse about the dogs being left alone is made. He seems to understand and hands me an envelope. Inside are two messages. The first is from Linda Hill. It says, Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “sink/sank/sunk.” Use one, use two, or use ’em all and get bonus points. Enjoy! The second is from the boss. It reads, Go with Louie, or he will break both your legs. This would appear to be an offer that cannot be refused. Before leaving with Louie, let me say if you would like to see what other bloggers have done with the prompt, visit Linda’s blog. “I would say this is taking a nasty turn.”

“Well, if you consider the mob, I would agree.”

“What are you going to do?”

“Go with Louie. What else is there to do?”

“What do you suppose the Boss wants?”

“I’m guessing it is connected with the statue.”

“Man. Everything is in this story but the kitchen sink.”

“Stay around a while. It may get added.”

“I think your desire to forget the statue just sank.”

“My desire is sunk, alright. But this is how fiction goes.”

“I keep forgetting this isn’t real.”

“Who says?”

“You just said the word fiction.”

“If that is the case, the VooDoo Ranger is a figment.”

“Okay, hold on there. You said fiction, not me.”

“So you believe?”

“Just texted Uber now.”

“Good man.”

Today’s good news story comes from station KDKA, the CBS affiliate in Pittsburgh, PA.

‘Guardian angel’: Mt. Lebanon mail carrier saves disabled veteran who fell into road

MT. LEBANON, Pa. (KDKA) — A local disabled veteran is calling his postal carrier a hero. He says the mailman pulled him to safety from the middle of the street.

“He is my guardian angel,” said Jim Brophy.

Brophy was installing lights outside his home on Mayfair Drive in Mt. Lebanon Monday morning when he fell down several concrete steps in front of his home, landing in the middle of the street.

The disabled Vietnam veteran said he couldn’t move and couldn’t even call for help because his cell phone flew out of his hands when he fell.

His mail carrier Eric was on his regular route when he happened upon Brophy lying in the street.

Brophy said Eric immediately parked his mail truck broadside to stop traffic flow and ran to his side. After asking a series of questions to ensure it was safe to move Brophy, Eric helped the Vietnam veteran to the sidewalk and then went to his door to get his wife.

“He said he’d do it for anyone. ‘I would do it for anyone, sir.’ That’s what he said, and then he thanked me for my service,” Brophy said.

After pulling Brophy to safety, Eric continued on his daily route, not knowing the impact he had on the man who calls him his “guardian angel.” Brophy said he couldn’t let that happen, so he waited for him this morning.

“I saw him walk up the street. I ran across the street, I said, ‘Hey, I don’t even know your name.’ He gave me his name and his route number. And I said, ‘I just want to thank you, man, you’re like my guardian angel, and I appreciate it, and we’re friends for life,’ and we hugged.”

The good news here is one man moved quickly to help another without thinking.
Today’s JohnKu talks about what it takes to be a hero. I hope you have a super weekend and a thoughtful Memorial Day.

Thursday – A Little Personal – Twiggy and Lucy Discuss Characters

“Remember two weeks ago when you thought about being a werewolf, Little One?”

“Sure, I remember. I know there were a lot of comments about it from folks.”

“Are you still considering that option?”

“You know there are so many downsides I’ve pretty much decided not to be a werewolf.”

“What are you considering now. You know we can’t play until you decide on what you are going to be.”

“This is a decision that can’t be rushed. It has monumental import on how we go forward.”

“Okay, but maybe you are putting a little too much thought into the whole thing.”

“Can you imagine coming after a wildebeest with the wrong animal?”

“I thought the puma was perfect.”

“Hold on. I think I’m picking up the scent of a puma right now.”

“Excuse me while I continue my stroll. Puma scent indeed.”

“I’m telling you. There has been a puma through here this morning.”

“Why don’t you just give in and keep your puma alter ego.”

“But a puma is a cat. You even said so.”

“But think of how powerful the puma is. Who cares if it is a cat. It is just play time anyway.”

“Playtime? I’m serious. One has been lurking here, just waiting to pounce on an unsuspecting Wildebeest.

“So you are going to be a puma again. Right?”

“The puna turns its back on the slow-moving Wildebeest, knowing the move will confuse the poor dumb animal.”

“I’ll take that as a yes.”

Tuesday – Anything Possible – Finger Point Prompt – The Beautiful One

The drill is to open a book to a random page and then, without looking, point to a place on the page. The word or words nearest the pointing finger becomes the prompt.

Today I opened The Last Drive to page 163, and my finger landed close to “The Beautiful One.”

The Beautiful One by John W. Howell © 2023

“I’m so jealous.”

“Of what, dear sister.”

“You get to go to parties and have a good time.”

“You can do the same if you wish.”

“Not likely.”

“Why do you say that?”

“Look at me.”

“And I see a lovely young woman.”

“You are saying that ’cause you know that I’m plain.”

“I wish you would quit saying that. You are not plain. You have a wonderful body and personality to match.”

“You are such a good sister. You know the right things to say.”

“Why don’t you come out with me tonight.”

“You know I can’t.”

“We’ll get someone to come in.”

“That won’t help. She gets frightened around strangers.”

“You know mom should be put in a home.”

“That is never going to happen.”

“I know I’ll stay home and keep you company.”

“That won’t help. You should go. Your beauty should not be wasted here.”

“I know what I’m about to say you will argue with me about.”

“What’s that?”

“You are the beautiful one.”

“I will argue with you on that.”

“I’ll fix popcorn, and we can argue during a movie.”

Top Ten Things Not to Do When Texting

Photo by Kelli McClintock on Unsplash

This post ran on February 13, 2017. Since folks are still texting, it may still be helpful. I hope you enjoy it.

* * *

The inspiration for this list came to me when I inadvertently sent a text to the wrong person. Luckily there was nothing in the text that might be embarrassing but caused my fiction mind to go into overdrive. I hope you enjoy it.

Top Ten Things Not to Do When Texting

10 When texting, do not use acronyms that you don’t understand. If you do, at best, you might be misunderstood. At worst, you may shock the receiver with your lack of social grace. (You thought WTF meant “Why the Fuss,” didn’t you, Ferd? Too bad Nun Mary Teresa was the recipient of your misunderstanding.)

9 When texting, check to whom you are sending the message. If you don’t, at best, your message will provide some laughs. At worst, that disparaging comment about Tiny, the WWF champ’s mother, will go right to him by mistake. (You could have sworn you were messaging your best friend only to discover you replied to Tiny’s last text to you where he threatened to break your leg. Don’t look, but he’s heading toward you now, Buford.)

8 When texting, do not rely on auto-correct to cover your mistakes. If you do, at best, you will need to explain that last text. At worst, you just sent a group text to the garden club where you explained that the male Pinto plant needed to be placed inside a moist verdant vessel. (Well, that sure didn’t come out the way you intended, did it, Alice?)

7 When texting, do not rely on voice to text as a time saver. If you do, at best, your numerous repeats will make it a longer process. At worst, your voice recognition program only understands Cambridge English, and you are from New Jersey. (Good luck with that bit of technology, Bunky. BTW Homeland Security thinks you want to blow something up.)

6 When texting, do not include a duck-faced or tongue-out selfie with an obscene gesture thrown in. If you do, at best, you’ll demonstrate your lack of originality and IQ. At worst, your selfie will be passed from phone to phone until it ends up with your boss. (That call from HR can’t be good, huh, Bosco?)

5 When texting, do not send pictures of your food. If you do, at best, folks will think you need a hobby. At worst, you will demonstrate a cry for help that needs intervention. (How is that good feelings camp treating you, Tex?)

4 When Texting, do not use technology to wish someone a happy Valentine’s Day as your only effort. If you do, at best, you’ll never have a relationship with that person. At worst, the resultant storm will not be assuaged without some very expensive make-up gifts. (Seemed like an easy way out, huh, Pard?)

3 When texting, do not use emojis to express what should be said in person or in words. If you do, at best, you’ll be seen as an automaton. At worst, you will receive emojis back that have at the core a message telling you to place your phone in a very dark place. (You don’t know where those emojis came from, do you, Buster?)

2 When texting, do not do it while in a social situation. If you do, at best, you will look up and find yourself alone. At worst, the rest of the group will take your action as being disinterested in the event or them and ignore you for the rest of the evening. (Let’s hope you even notice, Clod.)

1 When texting, do not drive a car or operate machinery. If you do, at best, you’ll escape with no consequences. At worst, you’ll hurt someone with your negligence. (You’ll have to live with that the rest of your life, Dope.)
