Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt – Trail/Trial

A picture of a string with drops of water- the logo for SoCS

Staring at the coffee machine does little to hasten the machinations. Instead, it takes its sweet time and is not responsive to any attempt to intimidate a quicker cup. Then, finally, the black liquid begins to pour from the spout, followed by a creamy foam. The aroma hits the olfactories and stuns the central nervous system’s addictive sensuality.

“Drink it,” screams the pain-addled brain. Thinking that is a good idea, the cup moves jerkingly to the lips. The sip and sigh combo broadcast to the body a message to hold on for a few seconds more. At last, the warmth spreads from the stomach to all sensory points. The body politic is in rapture over the calming effects of caffeine.

At last, there is the notice of a trail of corn kernels leading across the backyard to a box-like contraption supported by a stick. Leaving the protection of the house, an investigation shows someone has set a trap. The stick is tied to a string that meanders off and under the gate. Most certainly, this situation will begin a trial of some magnitude.

It wasn’t long until a roadrunner arrived on the scene, picking up and eating the corn. A quick beep beep sound caused me to jump out of the way. The roadrunner didn’t seem to be worried about the box trap and went about eating all the corn inside. The string goes taut, and the roadrunner jumps out of the way as the stick flies toward the gate.

A quick beep beep, and the roadrunner disappears around the corner. An envelope from Linda Hill on the turf is obviously dropped by the bird. Inside is a message which reads:

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “trail/trial.” Use one, use both, use them any way you’d like. Bonus points if you use both. Have fun!

If you want to have similar fun, visit Linda Hill’s blog and read how easy it is. Here is the link. https://lindaghill.com/2022/05/27/the-friday-reminder-and-prompt-for-socs-may-28-2022/

Trail/Trial by John W. Howell © 2022

“Well, you obviously got the bonus points.”

“Yeah. Isn’t it sweet?”

“I still don’t get the cartoon characters.”

“What’s not to get?”

“Why do you use them?”

“Cause they are fun. What’s wrong with having fun?””

“Like the roadrunner can’t carry an envelope.”

“Who says?”

“Logic.”

“Look around.”

“Yeah, what?”

“Where is it written that this place has any logic? This is fiction, for heaven’s sake.”

“But you take us down a rabbit trail every week.”

“Do you know what a trial it is to create a rabbit trail?”

“Makes me want to turn to drink.”

“Good idea.”

“Huh?”

“No excuse, too small to head for the pub. The fact that there is no logic here is a perfect excuse.”

“I’ll buy.”

“You are the best.”

“You drive.”

“The roadrunner can do that.”

“Not surprised. I’m not going to look a gift roadrunner in the mouth.”

“Here he comes.”

“Do we tip?”

“A few kernels extra, yeah.”

Friday JohnKu – AKA – TGIF – FRI-Yay/Good News

With all the bad news from Uvalde and Buffalo, we need to think of the good in this world.

Today’s good news comes to us from iheartdogs.com.

Here is the story as written.

First-Graders Create Sweet & Silly Kennel Cards To Help Shelter Dogs Get Adopted

Right now, animal shelters all across our beautiful country are experiencing a crisis. There are continuously more strays and surrenders in need of care than they have room to comfortably accommodate. There are simply more dogs than adopters.

So when some first graders found out that the current lack of space was affecting their local Texas shelter, they did what came naturally to lend a helping hand – they broke out their crayons!

Smile-inducing sweetness is practically second nature to a child. So when the Austin Animal Center made it known to the public that they desperately needed help making space in their shelter, long-time dog lover, volunteer foster mom, and first-grade teacher, Dr. Victoria Zolli, felt inspired to share this with her students. Naturally, they were all extremely excited to help.

So, drawing inspiration from a teacher she heard about on the radio, Dr. Zolli helped her class create kennel cards to entice prospective dog parents to adopt or foster one of their long-stay pooches.

Her creative class wrote from the perspective of the dogs, and using their newly acquired persuasive writing skills, they combined characteristics from the pictures and short bios provided by the shelter.

The kennel cards turned out to be colorfully eye-catching, and the kids’ clever, candid writing was incredibly enticing. Hung above the kennels of the adoptable dog they described, the cards have delighted everyone lucky enough to lay their eyes upon them.

Their amusing childhood candor, combined with the apparent love shown for these sweet pups, made for an extremely endearing endeavor.

It would be incredibly hard to walk away from a kennel with one of these cards above it without giving the pup a second look or even a meet and greet – which is exactly what these students, and their teacher, had in mind.

Sometimes, the dogs that have languished in shelters the longest can find their forever homes after spending some time in the spotlight. These pups have been overlooked long enough. The adorable kennel cards are giving them the attention they so rightfully deserve, which increases the odds that they will finally find forever homes!

Great job, first graders from Chaparral Star Academy, and thanks for caring so much about the fantastic dogs waiting to be adopted at your local shelter.

The good news here is that children were able to relate to those animals who need a forever home which had to have enriched their perspectives on life. Today’s JohnKu talks about life perspectives. I hope you have a lovely weekend.

Do you look around?

For those who need to be helped . . .

Or mind those blinders?

Thursday – A Little Personal – Twiggy and Lucy Look at Storm Residue

“So Lucy. What went on here?”

“Looks like a big storm moved through last night.”

“I can’t believe there are so many sticks. It’s like I’ve gone to heaven.”

“Look at this beauty. Could be classified as a log.”

“I really don’t know where to start.”

“I feel your pain. This is almost too much stick overload.”

“What is down there?”

“A bunch of leaves and a branch off the China berry tree. Not many sticks.”

“I have one just my size. Mmmm.”

“Go easy. You know Mom hates you to chew stuff from the yard.”

“Don’t worry. I’m going to keep it low-key for sure.”

“I thought I heard mom coming out.”

“I know she hates it when I choke on stick pieces.”

“Yeah, it was a false alarm. Keep chewing.”

You aren’t much for stick chewing, are you?”

“I never find any that taste good.”

“Try that live oak. It starts with the essence of plum and finishes on a pear note.”

“Uh. I think I’ll stick to chew toys.”

“Whew, that one made my eyes water.”

“What was it?”

“Stupid ash. They are kind of bitter. Uh oh. I hear mom.”

“Head for the porch. We’ll pretend we want inside.”

“Sticks? Mom. What sticks? Oh, you mean those on the turf.”

“Yeah, we hardly noticed them. I guess we had a storm last night.”

“Sure, Mom. We’ll stay away from them.”

“Butter wouldn’t melt in our mouth. We are so cool about those sticks.”

Tuesday – Anything Possible – Kreative Kue # 361 by Keith Channing

“Can you guys hold still?”

“Come on, dear, take the photo.”

“I need you all to smile.”

“George, we need to get on with the hike. These kids are getting hungry.”

“Yeah, dad. We are starving.”

“Okay, if everyone would just look this way and smile.”

“We are smiling.”

“Ralphie isn’t smiling.”

“It’s cause I need to go potty.”

“That’s enough, Ralphie. The world doesn’t need to know your private business.”

“Aw, mom.”

“Can you all take a step back? I’m having trouble getting everyone in the viewfinder.”

“There’s no room, dearest. Just do the best you can.”

“I know I’ll back up, which will solve the problem.”

“Be careful, D—. Oh my gosh, he went over the side. Quick kids, let’s go help.”

“Does this mean the photo session is over?”

“Hey, dad, you okay. Dad?”

“I’m okay. Just took a big step, is all. Everyone back in their place. I’ll be right up.”

“Mom.”

“What, junior?”

“Is it wrong to wish that Dad can’t get up here again?”

“Yes, but very tempting.”

Top Ten Things Not to Do On College Campus Visits

Photo by Alexander Schimmeck on Unsplash

This post was published on June 13th, 2016. However, I think there still might be advice worth repeating.

* * *

It is time for those beautiful college tours for the children going into their senior year of high school. This list has inspiration from a foggy memory of such visits fifteen years ago. I hope you enjoy it.

10 If you are visiting a college, do not stop in the bookstore first. If you do, at best, you will be overwhelmed by the assortment. At worst, you will buy a bunch of stuff only to learn that your child “hates this place.” (Well, it figures, doesn’t it? Waldo.)

9 If you are visiting a college, do not wear clothing from another school. If you do, at best, the personnel will think you haven’t a clue. At worst, your shirt will distract the student guide, and they will forget half of what you wanted to know. (You could have picked a non-rival, right?)

8 If you are visiting a college, do not feed the mascot. If you do, at best, the guard will ask you to leave. At worst, that cookie you just tossed the bear is the only thing on the planet to which it has an allergy. (There’s nothing like CPR on a sweating, hairy monster with the lousy breath, huh, Pilgrim?)

7 If you are visiting a college, do not interrupt the tour guide. If you do, at best, they will forget where they were and will have to start from the beginning. At worst, your tour guide is a fragile human being who was encouraged to lead tours as a method of building self-confidence and is now in a pool of tears trying to survive a complete meltdown. (Well, you could have waited until the recording was over)

6 If you are visiting a college, do not make fun of tradition. If you do at best, you will see some severe frowns. At worst, the massive varsity football player who just got drafted by the Oakland Raiders will want to talk to you in private. (So what does it hurt not to snicker when everyone says, “Howdy” to you.)

5 If you are visiting a college, do not go to one where your child has zero chance of being accepted. If you do, at best, they will suddenly see what they will be missing. At worst, they will decide that this is the college for them and none other will do. (Now, this is a fine kettle of fish we’ve gotten ourselves into, Laurel)

4 If you are visiting a college, do not just visit those with big-time sports teams. If you do, at best, some good schools can be overlooked. At worst, maybe your child has no interest in sports, and you’ll realize too late that they are here because you want to be here. (You already went to school. Give it up, Bucky)

3 If you are visiting a college, do not engage your tour guide in a discussion about tuition. If you do, at best, they will direct you to the provost’s office. At worst, you will be bringing new information to a student tour guide who will become increasingly concerned about the cost enough to get a job and flunk out. ( Never saw that one coming, did ya? Bud.)

2 If you are visiting a college, do not think acceptance will be automatic. If you do, at best, you will start to make plans that won’t materialize. At worst, you might just give the impression to everyone you meet that you think the entrance is a slam dunk, and there are more than enough who will want to thwart that view. (What a surprise on rejection letter day.)

1 If you are visiting a college, do not talk about your college experiences. If you do, at best, the students will think you have never grown up. At worst, your child will want to find a deep hole and a dump truck and guess who is the cargo. (None of those kids are interested in ancient history pops unless it is a required course, and maybe not even then)

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt – “Clear”

A picture of a string with drops of water- the logo for SoCS

Back home after a week of family and fun, looking forward to sipping the hot frothy beverage that has been hailed through the centuries as one of the pillars of life. The machine finally presents me with ten ounces of heaven, and a stroll in the garden is top on the list.

Disengaging the security system, flipping the machine gun tower switch to stand by, powering back the concertina wire, and disarming the claymore mines renders the backyard clear for a walk.

Passing the array of flowers gives new meaning to the word “home.” It is clear that rest is a welcome thing after a journey of a thousand gins. While admiring a particularly gorgeous rose, a sense of not being alone comes over me. A quick turn brings me face to face with a Cheshire Cat smoking a hookah while drifting about three feet off of terra firma.

“You, John?” A funny question coming from a cat. The short reply, “yes,” seems to satisfy its curiosity since its smile becomes more extensive. The cat takes a drag of the hookah pipe and hands me an envelope. A Thanks to the cat is met by a nod and puff of smoke. Once the air is clear, that cat is nowhere to be found.

I open the envelope, and inside is a message from Linda Hill, which reads, Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “clear.” Use it any way you’d like. Enjoy!

If you would like to enjoy this frivolity, visit Linda Hill’s blog and read how easy it is. Here is the link, https://lindaghill.com/2022/05/20/the-friday-reminder-and-prompt-for-socs-may-21-2022

Clear by John W. Howell © 2022

“Clear.”

“What are you doing?”

“Getting ready to start my airplane engine. You always yell out the window to ensure everyone knows to stay away from the propeller.”

“I don’t see an airplane.”

“I know. It’s my imagination.”

“Like that Cheshire Cat?”

“Exactly.”

“I’m starting to worry about you. It’s clear you are having some kind of event.”

“I’m just making sure I have the prompt covered.”

“I think you are in the clear on that.”

“Oh, thank you.”

“It wasn’t a compliment. You have me concerned.”

“Why?”

“Those tales about machine guns and concertina wire. I think you have some kind of bout with paranoia.”

“You wouldn’t think that if you had to put up with the characters that come a calling on Saturday.”

“Delusional.”

“Huh?”

“Another issue getting harder to bear.”

“Sounds good.”

“What?”

“A beer.”

“I said bear.”

“Where?”

“Just shoot me. Okay, I give. Who’s buying?”

“Whoever said beer first.”

“You.”

“Okay, I’ll need to raise some cash. Know anyone who wants to buy a slightly used Cheshire Cat?”

“Never mind. I’ll buy.”

Thursday – A Little Personal – Twiggy and Lucy in Full

“Do you realize we have a full episode today?”

“Did Dad get his Mac back?”

“No, he is still without the Mac. They had no parts to repair it, so he told them to send it back.”

“So why is there a full episode?”

“He figured out how to get photos on the site from his Dell laptop. The photos aren’t as good but better than nothing. I thought I heard something.”

“For an old guy like him, that’s something. I hear he’s back from his break.”

“Yup, he is back with a vengeance. Man, this is something.”

“What are you finding over there?”

“Hard to say. Seems different, though.”

“Hold on, I’m coming. I don’t want to miss a thing.”

“You can have whatever it is. I’m going to the patio.”

“I think you may be losing it. There is nothing here.”

“There was something there. Did you lose it?”

“Seriously, Lucy. I couldn’t find a thing.”

“For heaven’s sake. I track down a perfectly good puma, and you let it get away.”

“Puma? You’re kidding, of course. I don’t see a puma anywhere.”

“I would say it’s too bad cause now it’s gone.”

“I’m going to tell dad you are teasing me.”

“I would do that. On top of the fact he has no Mac, I’m sure he’ll appreciate you whining about a missing puma.”

“Maybe I’ll just lay on the porch.”

“Good choice. I’ll join you.”

Tuesday – Anything Possible – Kreative Kue #358 by Keith Channing

Before we get started on this prompt, I want to remind everyone that I will be taking a break from May 11th (Tomorrow) to May 19th.

In Keith’s words.

“Using this photo (below) as inspiration, write a short story, flash fiction, scene, poem; anything, really; even just a caption for the photograph. Either put it (or a link to it) in a comment or email it to me at keithchanning@gmail.com before 6pm on Sunday (if you aren’t sure what the time is where I live, this link will tell you). If you post it on your own blog or site, a link to this page would be appreciated, but please do also mention it in a comment here.

Go on. You know you want to. Let your creativity and imagination soar. I shall display the entries next time.”

Detente by John W.Howell 2022

“Did you ever hear the story about stepping on a crack?”

“No. Can’t say I have.”

“Step on a crack, break your mother’s back.”

“That’s harsh. Anyway, these are lines.”

“Break your mother’s spine.”

“Come off it. We are not here to discuss fairy tales.”

“Doesn’t matter anyway cause these are shadows.”

“If I may get to the point.”

“Sure, go ahead.”

“We need to figure out boundaries.”

“Boundaries?”

“Yes. I’m tired of you wandering into my space as if it is your own.”

“What do you mean ‘your space.'”

“I was adopted first, so my space is what I choose.”

“That’s a laugh, small stuff. Where do you get this attitude anyway?”

“Around the folks, I have to be nice. Out here, I can be myself, which is someone tired of sharing the land.”

“Do you see all the space here?”

“Yeah, so?”

“Okay, what part do you want?”

“All of it. I need you to move to those hills over there.”

“And if I don’t?”

“You know what? I never thought you would refuse.”

“Well, I refuse.”

“Darn it. I’m used to getting my way. So what do we do now?”

“I didn’t start this, but if you want my advice, we come to a position of mutual tolerance.”

“Detente?”

“Exactly.”

“What do I get out of that?”

“The absence of nasty wounds.”

“Makes sense. Shake on it.”

“How about a wag instead?”

“Done.”

Top Ten Things Not to do When the Stock Market Goes Nuts.

Before we get into the Top Ten list, I want to let you know that I will be attending my oldest grandaughter’s college graduation in Indiana and taking a log break from Wednesday, May 11th until Thursday, May 19th. I will be monitoring e-mails but not posting and probably not visiting blogs. I have not taken a break since I started blogging in 2013. The inspiration for this break comes from my Mac is still in repair, and my Dell PC weighs more than me, so it is staying home. I’m really lousy at communicating on the iPhone, so I decided it was break time. I’m letting you know because at my age, when I stop blogging, most figure I died, and that is not the case. I will send another reminder with each post until Wednesday.

Photo by Jamie Street on Unsplash

This post was originally published in August of 2015. Since the stock market has had a wild ride this month I figure it is still good advice.

* * *

The inspiration for this list is last week’s volatility in the price of stocks. Although I was tempted to do almost all of them, I refrained and kept myself under control. Hopefully, I will keep the list handy for the next time since I have a feeling there will be many more thrill rides this year.

Top Ten Things Not to do When the Stock Market Goes Nuts.

10 When the stock market goes nuts, do not go near an open window. If you do, at best, you will think about jumping out. At worst, you will take a jump and then realize the window is on the ground floor. (Pretty embarrassing dropping thirty-six inches)

9 When the stock market goes nuts, do not call your broker. If you do, at best, they will talk you into calming down. At worst, you and your broker will be calm as you lose 20% of your 401K. (Now, don’t you feel better after the call?)

8 When the stock market goes nuts, do not panic. If you do, at best, you will embarrass yourself in front of co-workers and family. At worst, you will need to seek a specialist on hair replacement when the panic is over. (That bare spot on the side definitely needs attention)

7 When the stock market goes nuts, do not sell anything. If you do, at best, you will feel in control but poorer. At worst, you will incur losses that will take years to replace, and now you waited too long to get back in, and the prices are already too high. (I know it’s complicated)

6 When the stock market goes nuts, do not listen to the analysts’ advice. If you do, at best, you will make a sudden move, and you will be already too late to save money. At worst, you will listen to the wrong analysis and do the opposite of the right thing. (After all, no two analysts have the same advice)

5 When the stock market goes nuts, do not let others know how bad things look. If you do, at best, you will have to deal with their concerns and advice and the problem of lost value. At worst, you will be compelled to make an unwarranted move to convince others you are in control. (This is true if you are the custodian of others’ funds)

4 When the stock market goes nuts, do not check your accounts. If you do, at best, you will be tempted to make a sudden ill-advised move. At worst, you will focus on the negative reports to the point where you will need shock therapy to make a comeback. (Positive reports are not valuable in the current situation.)

3 When the stock market goes nuts, do not read the financial news. If you do, At best, you will be convinced the world is coming to an end. At worst, you will need to have a cardiologist on speed dial to handle your recurring symptoms of heart failure. (Makes you want to be a trained EMS tech so you can self-administer defibrillation. Of course, you can take those paddles yourself, right?)

2 When the stock market goes nuts, do not go into the local pub. If you do, at best, the problem will still be there tomorrow, along with that gigantic throbbing head sharing your bed. At worst, you will get it into your mind to have it out once and for all with the stock seller person, and the police intercept you before you get to where they live. (Don’t worry about the DUI. As bad as it is, it’s easier to handle than what you were thinking about doing last night.)

1 When the stock market goes nuts, do not forget why you invested in stocks in the first place. If you do, at best, you’ll neglect your long-range financial goals. At worst, you will put all your money into a box under the bed with the possibility that it will be worth much less in the future or a burglar will find it. (Not to mention you arguing with the firefighters about getting back into your burning house.)
