Friday – JohnKu – AKA – TGIF

TGIF
Friday is here. Yipee. Our floors were supposed to be in and complete by yesterday. As in most things construction, two things happened. The first was the factory sent the wrong brace for the stair treads. Okay, they sent them by next day air, and the guys showed up on Wednesday to install the stairs. The second was a big surprise. They ran out of flooring so they could only finish one stairway. The material was ordered yesterday and will arrive by Monday. Then the flooring has to sit for at least two days to get used to the environment. If my math is correct, they will start working Thursday morning, and it takes one man two days to finish a stair. That brings us to next Friday. I guess at this point I’ll believe it when I see it. Today’s JohnKu is all about the laws of probability any project will finish on time.

  2. Yep, we’re going to need a celebration when this is over. When that last step is in place, let us know so we can send cheers. 😀

  3. The best-laid plans of mice… It’s frustrating when these last-minute crises turn up! 😦
I’m having delivery misadventures atm, which are apparently my fault, but they didn’t give me notice as to the date as usual, so I’m still blaming them! 😛 Luckily these aren’t for immediate use so they won’t upset the installation schedule!… oops, I’m tempting fate aren’t I! 🙂

  4. That’s what we learned too. Always add two, three weeks to any construction schedule. Even with the best intentions, there’s always a snag. Have a margarita and enjoy your weekend. Think of how you will celebrate when the work is done 🙂 😘

  5. Sorry for the delays, John, but look on the bright side — it’s getting done. With as much work as needed to be tackled and as few contractors available to tackle it, you’re one of the fortunate ones. Who doesn’t LOVE living in chaos?!?

  6. Seems to be a law of physics, and not only will a construction project be late, it’ll also cost 20% more than the estimate! Luckily, your insurance is paying this tab … right? 😐

  8. This is where my experience in systems development comes in handy. Start with your original estimate. Add two of whatever unit it’s measured in (days, months, years). Double that result.

Takes care of the gremlins, John.

  9. Builders can be a nightmare. That is the case in the UK anyway. I would have thought with the superior customer service in the US they would not be so problematic. You will get there in the end John.

  10. That is an all too familiar story when it comes to contractors and building projects. Here’s to next Friday. When you get home from Galveston, perhaps it will finally be complete.

  11. Dang, John. I’m sorry about all that. What a pain. Well, let’s toast the weekend. I have a nice Merlot, I’m sure you and Molly have some lovely vintage. Take a deep breath and a sip of wine… then have more wine. 😉
