Views of the Neighborhood – Trail of Lights Edition One

Each year the city of Lakeway sets up a trail of lights around city hall. This weekend was the opening of the display, which runs until January 2, 2020. There was a band, Santa and Mrs. Claus, Smores and more. As you can imagine, there are a ton of photos since the event is enormous. Rather than try to do it in one post, I have broken it into two posts. Next week will be the second edition.

There’s a signpost up ahead.

The first stop is a giant Holiday Tree.

Several figures

A Snowperson

Bridge to more lights

Snowflake

Heron and Flamingo.

Globes in the trees.

Santa on a train.

Santa on a Harley

A Longhorn. (Of course)

A stagecoach.

Skaters on a light pond

A shooting star and family taking photos of a child on dad’s shoulders.

When I took this, I thought it was an Eagle. It looks more like an owl.

Next week we will see more lights and visit some of the activities.

We have some huge displays here, like the Houston Zoo lights, but I’ve always enjoyed these smaller, local creations. My mother once had a pin that looked exactly like that shooting star; the star was a pearl, and the rays were rhinestones. Good memories!

Fun and at least you had dry weather – we took the little grandchildren to Bournemouth Christmas Tree festival yesterday evening in the pouring rain – at least the puddles looked pretty with the lights reflected in them!

Looks like you’re all getting in the spirit. I like that it’s a walking tour. So many cities do driving tours and those have never seemed friendly.

Thanks for this lovely post, John. I thought as I scrolled from one gorgeous image to the next, about similar displays all around the globe and how the cost can be justified in the face of abject poverty and homelessness in most countries around the world. I’m just as guilty as the next person with my tiny Christmas lights adorning my home each Christmas. I’m not advocating a ban because these displays are uplifting and inspiring, I’m just struggling with the cost factor…

The delight and spirit of the holiday I saw on the faces of the children makes the expense well worth it in my mind. If a light display makes just a few people open their hearts to the less fortunate then it is also well worth the expense. In short, any expense that lifts the human spirit to a new level is worth it in my book. In today’s world there is a uneven concentration on thinking and talking about all that is wrong. These lights put a different perspective on life which leads to more thinking about what is right.

I really love the owl, John, and I think that’s what he is too. Our community does huge light show that is very similar to yours. Displays really bring folks out and help put them in the Christmas spirit, don’t they? Does y’all’s offer hot cocoa and peppermint sticks, too?
