“I thought I heard dad say there was some damage to the trees from the ice storm.”
“The damage is over here on the patio side.”
“Oh. I don’t know why I thought it was the potting bench plants.”
“Well, they are toast too. But take a look at the mountain laurel.”
“There are some limbs here on the ground.”
“So true. The weight of the ice broke those limbs off the tree.”
“Can we put them back on?”
“I’m afraid not. Once a limb has been severed it will die.”
“OMG. That sounds pretty severe.”
“Did you notice Dad’s magnolia?”
“He’s not going to like all those limbs on the ground.”
“I think we’ve seen enough, Little One. Let’s go play.”
“This stuff still smells alive. Are you sure it can’t be put back?”
“I’m sure Little One. It is the way nature works.”
“Well then we ought to invent a way that things can live even if they have something wrong wth them.”
“You talking about trees, now?”
“Like these leaves, Lucy. Why do they have to lie here.”
“It’s a cycle that we have talked about before. It is the way nature works.”
“Doesn’t mean we have to like it.”
“You can stay there and sniff that turf all the way to St Louis. As for me? I’m thinking about a soft chew.”
“Hold on. I think I found an acorn.”
“Too early. It’s a rock.”

Sorry you had damage, John. My parents suffered a great deal of tree loss in Boerne as well, but thankfully are otherwise safe. Wishing you all a peaceful weekend!

No we did not. We are on a different power grid than Austin. Ours is run by business people. Austin’s is run by bureaucrats.

I wondered about your power. It’s good to hear you didn’t suffer in that loss. I have friends in Austin who still are without. One of the Austin meteorologists put up a hilarious post showing ice weight equivalents in Corgis. Lucy and Twiggy might enjoy that!

After our recent snow storm, we had so many big tree limbs come down, my husband was out there with a chainsaw for three days.

Sorry about the damage. We had some wind damage here. I spent time doing clean up yesterday. At least your pups have come to terms with the reality of the severed limbs.

I’d read that Texas had been hit hard with freezing rain and ice, which causes a lot of damage. Sorry to see the damage caused to your home, but glad you still have electricity. It’s good to see the girls checking things out and philosophizing about the effects of nature.

100,000 folks in Austin still don’t have power. The trees took out power lines. Why were the trees over the power lines? Well the environmentalists protested trimming them and the city acquiesced. Now everybody’s freezing.

Oh my. It sounds like what’s happened in the Kruger National Park in South Africa. Greenpeace protested about the culling of elephants and took the park to court. The park lost the case and now they aren’t culling elephants. There are far to many elephants (this case was 10 years ago) and the elephants are turning the park into a desert because they eat huge amount of fodder and destroy the trees. Sometimes, the environmentalists need to do more research before they state their claims. I am a huge supporter of our game and national parks but I do it from a knowledgeable and educated stance.

Resilience and character storms tend to prove and bring out both of those qualities. I hope Twiggy is knitting these gems down in her Palm Pilot for later use. Most of the bent down branches should lift back up in the next few days. Ice storms and heavy wet snows are rough. As always one day at a time.

I heard about the storm on the news, John. Sorry to see the damage to your plants. We had ‘thundersnow’ up here about two weeks back. It’s a thunderstorm during a blizzard. Maybe I’m crazy, but I found it fascinating to watch.

I experienced thundersnow when I lived in Michigan. We had about six inches an hour. Totally snowed in for four days.

The magnolia will make it I believe. It has a few branches missing but okay overall. We have 72 degrees today so I can certainly feel sorry for you especially if the furnace is not working.
