Friday John Ku – AKA – TGIF

Thank God it's Friday

Friday is here again, and I think it is about time. This week has been the week of repair. No, not mental or physical repair but repair of the house. We have had workmen in and around since Monday. There was a leak in the garage that required taking out a substantial amount of drywall, finding the hole, and then putting the drywall back. Included was plastering and painting with a side of texture thrown in.

The strip of siding that was blown off in the wind which needed replacing. Just when we thought all the work was complete, our Time Warner system did a hick-up, and a tech was here for the better part of a half day. So now looking at the weekend I can say (knock wood) the workers are gone, and there is peace once again.

Today’s John Ku is about why not to put off repairs. I hope you like it.

Wednesday Story Day – AKA- Hump Day

It’s Wednesday Story Day again. Last week we ended on a macabre note. Mrs. Worthe wanted some collateral from Ben to back up his guarantee of silence. Since Ben does not have any money, Mrs. Worthe decided a good bit of collateral would be his right thumb. The idea of Ben losing his thumb was a cringe moment in the story. Let’s go back and see if Mrs. Worthe is going to follow through on her threat.
“My right thumb? You’re kidding right?”
“Well, Ben I don’t see that you have a choice. You don’t have any money or something of value to use to back up your word to remain silent.”
“Y-you can trust me Mrs. Worthe. There is no percentage in me talking to anyone about this. I get your point. I’ll be quiet honest.”
“You are right-handed aren’t you Ben?”
“Yes, Mrs. Worthe. Please, I’m begging you not to do this.”
“Let me see. If I take your right thumb then even holding a pen would be difficult. Wouldn’t it?”
“I-it w-would be impossible M-Mrs Worthe.”
“Oh look Ben. This room has all kinds of sharp tools. Here is a staple all wrapped in a sterile package. I’ll just bet a couple of swipes with this baby and that thumb would drop off.”
“M-Mrs. W-Worthe. W-what will it t-take to get you to stop.”
“Here is a pair of scissor looking things. I wonder what they use these for?”
“Mrs. Worthe. PLEASE.”
“Yes, Ben. What is it?”
“Isn’t there anything else I could give you to show good faith?”
“Let me think Ben. What do you value?”
“I have my car.”
“No that heap may be something you like but not for me.”
“Books, clothes, my class ring from high school.”
“Ah, your class ring. Where is that ring? I don’t see it on your finger.”
“Alexis has it. She is wearing it.”
“So you value the ring?”
“I do. It is something Alexis and I share.”
“And you value Alexis don’t you?”
“Y-yes I do.”
“You know Ben I think you and I can strike a deal.”

Tuesday – Anything Possible – Kreative Kue #70 by Keith Channing

I get knocked out by Keith Channing’s photo prompts. Here’s what Keith says, “Using this photo (below) as inspiration, write a short story, flash fiction, scene, poem; anything, really; and either put it (or a link to it) in a comment or email it to me at keithkreates@channing.fr before 6pm next Sunday (if you aren’t sure what the time is where I live, this link will tell you). If you post it on your own blog or site, a link to this page would be appreciated, but please do also mention it in a comment here – for reasons I have yet to fathom, pingbacks don’t seem to be working.

Go on. You know you want to. Let your creativity and imagination soar. I shall display the entries, with links to your own blog or website, next Monday.”

Here’s the photo.

My Interpretation.

Our Baby by John W. Howell

“Mommy, when do I get a turn?”

“Just a minute Jimmy. I’m not sure she can stand. I’ll let you know.”

“But Mommy, you promised I could play with her.”

“I know sweetie, but we need to make sure you don’t accidentally hurt her.”

“Oh, mommy. I don’t want to hurt her ever.”

“I know sweetheart. That’s why we need to make sure.”

“Why is she having trouble sweetheart?”

“I’m not sure honey. She seems to have a balance problem.”

“She is happy, though.”

“I know. It is very hard to hold her. She wants to run I’m sure.”

“Did you ask her if she knows what the problem could be?”

“Yes but all I got was a bunch of baby talk. The agency said it takes time for the language skills to become natural.”

“Maybe we should call someone.”

“Might be a good idea later. The agency said to try several steps before calling.”

“Did you do them?”

“Well, everything but the last step.”

“The last step. What is that?”

“I almost hate to do it, though. I have heard of others not coming back after that last step.”

“Well, maybe there was another problem with the others. I’m sure the agency wouldn’t tell you to do a step that would harm her permanently.”

“I guess you’re right. Okay, the last step it is. I’m hitting the power switch now.”

Top Ten Things Not to do in the Wind

Last weekend we had winds more than eighty miles an hour. Although not a hurricane these are the kinds of winds  can cause damage. We did have a piece of siding come off, but little damage otherwise. You can see the strip missing in the photo.

This list was inspired by the idea of trying to function while the wind is blowing. I didn’t try any of these things but want to make sure all have been warned. (Of course, not too many of you are faced with winds at the eighty-mile an hour level.)

10 If you are caught in high winds, do not try to put up a tent. If you do, at best you’ll end up with a pile of waving canvas. At worst, you and the tent might get caught in the wind and break the individual altitude record for unmotorized flight.( you forgot an oxygen mask didn’t you Wheezer)

9 If you are caught in high winds, do not count on that hair glue to keep the toupee in place. If you do, at best you’ll need to be fast to catch it. At worst, your neighbor will witness the top of your head flying off and will end up in the ER with heart problems. (Guess who has no insurance? Yup it’s the neighbor)

8 If you are caught in high winds, do not decide a kiteboard session would be fun. If you do, at best you may find yourself being carried out to sea. At worst, you may find yourself carried inland through endless acres of cactus and palm trees. (I think you might need more than iodine for those wounds Bunkie.)

7 If you are caught in high winds, do not think it is a good idea to cook out. If you do, at best you may not be able to light the fire. At worst, you will get the fire lit as well as the south side of town. (Your insurance policy does not cover stupid)

6 If you are caught in high winds, do not continue with the volleyball game even though the score is tied. If you do, at best that hard spike will come right back to hit you. At worst, your lightest player may have difficulty staying grounded. (Man did you see how they flew after that saving dive for the ball.)

5 If you are caught in high winds, do not continue your sailing excursion. If you do, at best you’ll be able to ride out the storm by hauling down the sheets and setting a storm anchor) At worst you’ll be doing fifty knots just before the mast finally gives way.(Lucky for you this thing is made of wood. Sure is wet though isn’t it?)

4 If you are caught in high winds, do not continue your golf game. If you do, at best you’ll lose a number of balls that become airborne. At worst, you and your golf cart will by some miracle manage to land after a harrowing flight over the 15th green. (Amazing how things without wings can take off. Right Bubba?)

3 If you are caught in high winds, do not forget the old adage about spitting into the wind. If you do, at best you’ll end up embarrassed and wet. At worst, just when you thought it safe you’ll let go and unfortunately, hit some guy named Dick the Bruiser  who is standing downwind. (Wasn’t he the wrestler on TV?)

2 If you are caught in high winds, do not continue your high ladder painting project. If you do, at best your paint droplets will cover a half-mile square area. At worst, you and your paint Could be the subject of the nightly news under the headline, “A New Art Form Has Been Developed called Body Drop with Paint” (You are wondering which hit first the body or the paint)

1 If you are caught in high winds, do not continue to ride your hoverboard, bike, or Segway in an attempt to get to safety. If you do, at best you finally give up. At worst, you will be pulled over by the state police exceeding the speed limit on the freeway. (“All I could do was hang on officer,” is your excuse.)

Sunday Fifty -Two Views of the Gulf – Vote Needed

Today is a little overcast but promises to be more sunshine and a high near eighty degrees. The tire marks are as a result of the gathering of our residents for a fire on the beach. As you can see, I managed to put a poll together. This photo will be the last photo of the Gulf if the votes swing toward something different. Next week is the fifty-two-week mark for this feature. I hope to have a composite slide show built which will be published here and then moved to the sidebar. You will be able to access the results of the poll after your vote.

Last week’s photo.

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt Real

Stream of Consciousness Saturday time again. This week’s prompt is “real.” Linda Hill, the dungeon mistress, says we can use it with a prefix or suffix or just use it by itself. The freedom here is exhilarating. If you would like to join, this merry band of nut cases go to Linda’s site and read all about it.  http://lindaghill.com/2016/03/25/the-friday-reminder-and-prompt-for-socs-march-2616/

Here is my interpretation.

Real By John W. Howell ©2016

“It’s been real, but I have to get back .”

“Back? Back where?”

“Back to my real life as a business person.”

“Aw, come-on. Just one more day.”

“No I love hanging out with you, but all good things must come to an end.”

“Do you actually think the life of a business person is real?”

“Sure beats sitting around and feeling like a sloth.”

“What do you mean feeling like a sloth?”

“You know what I mean. Staying in bed all day. Eating all the wrong things. Watching those cursed movies.”

“You like it, though.”

“I like it too much. You make me real comfortable. Almost so I never want to go back.”

“Why don’t you just stay? What we have together is the real life not that pretend stuff you do.”

“You mean make money so we can sit around doing all the real things you think of as life.”

“You know how to hurt a guy. You know I can’t make money.’

“No one asked you to. My real life gives us this paradise, but I have to get back.”

“I wish you could stay. When you’re here, I feel so alive.”

“I know darling, but you know the rules.”

“Yes, I do. It’s just so dark and lonely when you leave.”

“Robbie? We’ve talked about this before. You are not a real person and when I leave I need to take your power pack with me. I can’t have you trying to do things on your own.”

“I always feel real when you are here.”

“Yes, dearest I know. sleep well.”

Friday JohnKu – AKA – TGIF

Another week has flown by. Well, to those of us who are not involved in high-pressure jobs it has flown by. I can imagine if you were trying to save the world or work as a bomb defuser the week goes by at a snail pace. To this writer, it seemed to pass pretty quickly.

We are looking forward to our new neighborhood social event. We are calling it Full Moon Fire. With our new walkway in place, we have decided to celebrate the full moon with a fire on the beach and a gathering of neighbors. The idea is to take your golf cart loaded with food and drink over the walkway (now called a cartway) and watch the moon rise over the Gulf while enjoying the company of the neighbors. Since this will be the first and it will be tonight I’m not sure what to expect. I think it could be a beautiful evening. We will see. Today’s John Ku talks about the moon.

Thursday – A Little Personal – Guest Appearance by Lisa Burton for The Playground by C.S. Boyack #RRBC

I am very pleased that Lisa Burton the Robot assistant has stopped by Fiction Favorites on behalf of her boss C. S. Boyack author of The Playground to discuss his new release which can be preordered now for delivery on April 4th. Here is the link http://a-fwd.com/asin=B01D6EF6RI

“So Lisa it is so good to see you again.”

“Thanks for inviting me over, John. As you know, Craig has a new novel out, and part of my job is to promote it. I also brought you a poster that has a bit of popularity going for it, but this one was pure accident.”

 “How’s that, Lisa?”

“Craig likes to include animals in his stories. He hasn’t done this every time, but this story has a dog in it. A bad dog, I might add.”

“Pets can add…. What’s so special about this dog?”

“This dog takes up with a character named Clovis. Clovis is a brutal thug, hired to retrieve some unique computer programming. The dog is kind of pushy, and I think Clovis likes that. Clovis is a loner, and the dog makes him a little bit more human, but just a bit.”

“What can you tell us without giving too much away?”

“Clovis and the dog make a trip to New Orleans to catch the IT man before he leaves the country on a ship. I won’t say that Clovis takes care of the dog, they’re more like partners. Having a friend, of sorts, changes Clovis. It’s subtle, and comes on slowly, but by the end of the story, I wound up liking Clovis.”

“Craig said the story is a paranormal tale with some science fiction sprinkles. What does that mean?”

“This story explores the dangers of the Internet upon children. We all know the Internet is great. I’m a robot girl, and couldn’t function without it, but what our children do should be supervised. A greedy businessman develops a social network for children called The Playground Network.”

“Thus the name of the book.”

“Right, but he builds the devices into toys like dolls, plush animals, and action heroes designed to capture the eyes of children. He plans to use our own children as a personal military of sorts. The toys are brainwashing our children while the parents aren’t watching. To reach his goals, the businessman turns to the occult, and that’s where it gets really strange.”

“Well, it is one of Craig’s stories.”

“Exactly. When it comes time to choose the promotional posters, we always have options. We decided that people love dogs, and the artist thought a day at the beach would be fun. I love animals, and thought hugging a big old squishy dog would be a fun way to spend the afternoon.”

 “That sounds sweet, I suppose.”

“That’s what I thought too. Except he’s a bad dog. The artist laughed until he fell over, then told me it was a great poster. I have to agree with him, but it ruined my swag deal.”

 “What’s a swag deal?”

“I get to keep all the stuff from my promotional work. All I got out of the deal was a swimsuit top. A top that doesn’t match anything else, I might add. The dog ate the other part.”

 “Did you keep the dog?”

“Heck no! My pet rabbit would be terrified. Clovis can have him back.”

“Thanks for coming by to tell us about The Playground.“

“Pleasure being back here, John. Enjoy the poster, and the book.”

“Oh, I will Lisa. Tell Craig hey for me.”

Wednesday Story Day – AKA – Hump Day

Wednesday Story Day again and last week we left poor Ben pleading with Mrs. Worthe not to give him a shot. She threatened him with the prospect of being given too much of the sedative and possibly severe disabilities as a result of the medication. The final kicker was her offer to take care of him. Buwahaha. Oh, wait. I had to laugh at that offer. Just imagine Mrs. Worthe taking care of Ben. Let’s join them back at the ER and see what Mrs. Worthe has in store.

“Mrs. Worthe do you really have to stick me?”
“Ben my boy. I don’t have to do anything. It is really up to you.”
“Up to me?”
“Yes. We can do this the easy way or the hard. It has to be your choice.”
“I take the easy. What do I have to do?”
“Well for starters you need to keep your mouth shut.”
“Okay, I can do that. What else?”
“Not so fast young man. You have given me your word not to talk, and then I find out you are blabbing to everyone in the place including calling for a priest.”
“I’m sorry. I just felt so very alone. I needed to reach out to someone.”
“Well looks to me like you’re reaching out to everyone.”
“Yes, you are right. Let’s just say I panicked.”
“I don’t particularly care for people who panic Ben.”
“How can I make it up to you?”
“Let me get back to you on that, Ben. For now, we need to take care of the present problem.”
“P-present problem?”
“Yes, Ben. You are a significant liability, and unfortunately, I don’t trust you to keep your word.”
“I promise I’ll keep quiet.”
“A promise is not enough.”
“What do you want then?”
“It’s not what I want Ben. It’s more a matter of what I need from you.”
“M-Mrs Worthe. W-what do you need.”
“A guarantee that you will not talk.”
“You have it.”
“What kind of collateral are you prepared to put up to back your guarantee?”
“Collateral? I don’t have any money. You know that.”
“Oh, Ben. I need something a little more important to you than money.”
“Okay tell me what it is and you can have it.”
“Your right thumb, Ben.”
