Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt “Back of the Fridge”

A picture of a string with drops of water- the logo for SoCS

The coffee is taking an unusual amount of time today. An ear to the machine picks up the usual sounds, so all must be normal. It brings to mind that perhaps divices have trouble getting going in the morning too. Looking in the back of the fridge pays off with not only spotting the half and half but hearing the satisfying sputter and pour sounds of the nectar of the gods flowing into my mug.

The addition of half and half pushes the morning brew into a new dimension whose mesmerizing quality is broken by the klaxon warning horn. Throwing treats on the floor finally gets Twiggy and Lucy to come down from the ceiling and substitute sounds of joy for the ear-bleeding decibel level of their barking.

A gulp of coffee and a sigh precede the opening of the door ritual. Gate thrown open, bar lifted, concertina wire coiled, machine guns on standby, Trebuchet disarmed, Claymore mines picked up, submarine net in the moat raised, boiling oil turned off, hovering drone grounded, bolts thrown and locks undone.

The open door reveals a being that looks like Wile E. Coyote. “Don’t tell me. I called the ACME explosives company and asked for an engineer to help remove that safe and person from my backyard. So please don’t say you are him.”

He nods, and the cold feeling along my spine immediately leads me to believe a problem of monumental proportion now exists. Wile E. Coyote is perhaps the most incompetent user of ACME products. He immediately hands me two envelopes. The first contains a certification of one Wile E. Coyote as an ACME happiness engineer. Looking him in the shifty eyes confirms the depth of the trouble. The second envelope contains a message from Linda Hill. It reads. Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “back of the fridge.” Write the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the phrase “back of the fridge.” Enjoy!

Back of the Fridge by John W. Howell © 2022

“You didn’t do the prompt.”

“I did so.”

“You mentioned the phrase but not the first thing you think of when you think of ‘back of the fridge'”

“Yes, it was the half and half.”

“For heaven’s sake. I thought you would come up with something like a hairy cheese ball or a petrified pork chop.”

“And what kind of story would that make?”

“I don’t know. You are the writer, not me.”

“Who wants to read about a piece of cheese or pork chop anyway?”

“You could have made a humorous thing out of it.”

“Like how?”

“I don’t know. Maybe the pork chop that ate New York.”

“Good thing I’m the writer here.”

“What does that mean?”

“Your suggestion sucked.”

“Gee, don’t hold back on my account.”

“I thought you would mention a Voo Doo Ranger in the back of the fridge.”

“You have one?”

“The Producer just loaded twelve in there.”

“Twelve? For you, that’s a three-month supply. Maybe I can help you with that.”

“Maybe so. Give me your keys.”

“I’m only going to have one.”

“Says the man with no self-control.”

“I resemble that. Okay, here are the keys. Where’s the opener?”

“I thought you would say trading car keys for a church key.”

“Now you know why I’m not the writer. Opener?”

“Top drawer over there.”

Ohio Dog in Shelter Over 2,555 Days Finally Finds His Forever Home: ‘Flip Is a Very Loving Dog’

Flip’s new pet parent told PEOPLE the rescue dog is adjusting well to home life and recently enjoyed his first nap in a big bed.

After spending years in the shelter system, Flip the dog has a forever home.

On September 16, PEOPLE shared the black-and-white dog’s story. At that time, the 7-year-old rescue pooch had spent over 2,555 days in Ohio shelters waiting to be adopted.

Jennifer Schorr, the associate director of the education division at the Buckeye Community Hope Foundation, heard about Flip’s situation through a Facebook post. Having lost her beloved German Shepherd to illness a few months ago, Schorr wasn’t looking to adopt a new dog right away.

“But when I saw Flip, he melted my heart, and his story melted it even more,” Schorr told PEOPLE, adding that she knew she wanted her next pet to be an older dog “that needed some TLC.”

Enamored with Flip’s sweet face, Schorr reached out to Lake Humane Society to ask about adopting the dog, who was in a foster home at the time. The shelter told Schorr that they didn’t know much about Flip’s history, except that he spent time at a shelter in Youngstown and likely experienced abuse early in his life.

To ensure that Flip and Schorr would be a good fit, Lake Humane Society asked Schorr to visit the canine, so she made the 3-hour drive to the shelter to meet Flip face to face.

“They told me he might not warm up to me at first, but it was just the opposite. He came and sat next to me, and he even gave me kisses,” Schorr said of her introduction to Flip.

After this first adorable interaction, Schorr met with Flip again and then had the dog visit her house in Pataskala, Ohio.

“Flip trotted right in and made himself at home!” Schorr said.

Schorr’s residence is now officially Flip’s home, and the pup has continued to amaze his new owner with his warm, welcoming personality.

“Flip is a very loving dog and loves to cuddle on the couch with you,” Flip’s pet parent shared.

And while Flip is still nervous about some new things, Schorr is content to “go slow” with the dog and let him adapt to home life at his own speed.

“We take walks around the neighborhood, and he is the perfect dog. He is adjusting very well to being out of the shelter. He actually slept with me in bed the other night for the first time ever in his life. He was in heaven!” she said

“I am confident Flip will be just fine living with me in his forever home. I love him so much already,” Schorr added.

Schorr also said that she hopes Flip’s story inspires others to adopt their next pet, so they can experience the companionship that blossoms after you save a life.

“There are so many loving dogs that just need a chance to become your furry friend. Some may need more care and attention than others, but they all deserve it. The tail wag, kiss on the cheek, or smile on their face lets you know how much you are appreciated. It is never too late — Adopt!” Schorr shared.

The good news here is that Flip is now in a loving home.

Today’s JohnKu talks about pets. I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Thursday – A Little Personal – Lucy and Twiggy Play

“Lucy, it’s another day. Got a game in mind?”

“I haven’t given it much thought up to now.”

“We could play tag.”

“We just played that yesterday. Let’s think harder.”

“Yeah, you’re right. We haven’t played Water Buffalo and Puma for a while.”

“That’s true. I always like that game ’cause I don’t have to move fast.”

“Okay, then it’s settled. You are the water buffalo, and I’m the puma.”

“I have to get into character. One minute while I grow some horns.”

“Okay, I hope the Stanislavsky method stands you in good stead.”

“The water buffalo stands on the prairie above the water hole sniffing the wind.”

“The puma decides that the water buffalo would make a tasty lunch.”

“Jeepers. The water buffalo is taken by surprise as she catches the scent of the puma.”

“The puma decides to do a flanking maneuver to avoid those deadly horns.”

“The water buffalo swings around to protect the flank and the butt.”

“The puma goes for a direct frontal attack, counting on speed for an advantage.”

“The water buffalo stands steady and prepares to lower her head to meet the puma.”

“One last burst of speed, the puma does a slight fake to throw off the water buffalo.”

“The water buffalo braces for a direct hit from the puma.”

“The puma was not ready for the about-face of the water buffalo.”

“The water buffalo surprises the puma with a burst of speed and in the end avoids danger.”

“Nicely played, Lucy. But, unfortunately, I was not ready for that evasive trick.”

“Well, it shows that old dogs can learn new tricks.”

“You can say that again. How about I buy you a drink.”

“Very kind of you, Little One. Have the barkeep set up a pan of water? That is hot work.”

“So take the bloody photo, will ya.”

“I can’t seem to get this camera to focus.”

“Do you have it on auto?”

“Yes, but something’s not working right.”

“Just touch the shutter button lightly, and you’ll get a message.”

“What kind of message?”

“Will tell you if the lighting or setting is right.”

“All I see is you and some lines.”

“Are the lines green?”

“Sort of orange.”

“Means the setting is off. Check auto again.”

“It is on.”

“Okay, let’s forget it.”

“No, wait. I think I have solved the problem.”

“How?”

“My finger was blocking the sensor.”

“Right, of course, it was.”

“Say cheese.”

“Limburger.”

“I got it. Good thing too ’cause the film needs replacing.”

“Good thing. The guy is headed this way. I’m sure he will wonder what we are doing around his Land Rover.”

“Well, don’t worry, at least we got the shot. I’m going to send copies to the folks in Texas. They’ll get a kick out of the license plate.”

“If it’s a good shot, I want to send one to my mom too.”

“This may be the best shot of the trip. She will love it.”

“I hope so. All the rest are blurry.”

Top Ten Things Not to Do if You Are Over Seventy Years of Age

Photo by Bruno Martins on Unsplash

This list was initially published on October 13, 2014. I was 73 when I wrote it, and now I am 81. Checking it over, and it still makes sense. If you are over seventy, pay attention. If not, I hope you get a few laughs.

* * *

This list was inspired by having the opportunity to be around some of my peers over the last couple of weeks.

Top Ten Things Not to Do if You Are Over Seventy Years of Age

10 If you are over seventy, ensure the foreign object you think is in your food is really there. If you don’t, at best, the store manager will give you your money back but will give you that “old person” roll of the eyes. At worst, the object turns out to be your glasses that fell off while you were looking closely to find out what it was. The customer service person will discover this in front of twenty other shoppers.

9 If you are over seventy, do not think you can ride a bicycle at top speed, wipe out and bounce like you did when you were fifty. If you do, at best, you will have a friendly reminder as you soak in a hot bathtub and eat aspirin like M&Ms. At worst, you will be among the lucky few spending several hours in the ER surrounded by one hundred of your closest friends who all got there ahead of you.

8 If you are over seventy, do not try to leave the house without your glasses. If you do, at best, you won’t be able to read the credit card terminal, and the total matches what you bought. At worst, you will be clueless when the bank teller asks you to sign the withdrawal slip made out for you, and four days later, you read in the newspaper that the teller is spending three weeks in Aruba.

7 If you are over seventy, do not decide the surfing competition looks winnable since there is only one entrant in the seventy and above bracket. If you do, at best, you will have nothing more catastrophic than looking like a fool. At worst, you will wipe out and ground yourself on the beach, where the medal committee will erect a monument in your honor.

6 If you are over seventy, do not think your dance routine is still in. If you do, at best, the rest of the crowd will be laughing behind your back. At worst, your performance will take up so much room and bump so many people the bouncer will remove you for your own protection.

5 If you are above seventy, do not go anywhere near a Karaoke machine. If you do, at best, you will get a short slow song you can handle poorly. At worst, you will pull a rap number and scare yourself with the words that scroll across the screen, reminding you that being scared is not suitable for your pacemaker performance or your underwear.

4 If you are over seventy, never drive in the left lane. If you do, at best, you will wonder what all those hand signals mean in the context of driving. At worst, you will have a monster truck come so close to your rear bumper you will be forced to look in the rearview mirror only to swerve into some hapless seventy-year-old next to you.

3 If you are over seventy, do not raise your arms above your head if you are wearing short sleeves; if you do, at best, you won’t notice the extra movement of skin and will think the wind is picking up. At worst, you will cause enough stares to stop traffic with those undulating biceps that seem to have headed south.

2 If you are over seventy, do not go to a restaurant any earlier than 7:00. If you do, at best, you will get the early bird menu and won’t really find green Jell-O to your liking. At worst, a youthful server will insist that you will genuinely enjoy the breaded fish sticks instead of the sizeable juicy steak you intended. “Besides,” she says. “It is much easier to chew.”

1 If you are over Seventy, do not try to tell stories about how great it was in the old days. If you do, At best, you will be finishing your stories to yourself. At worst, you will notice people running away as you come close, and it won’t be because you have worn the same clothes for five days. (well, maybe)

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Prompt – Me

A picture of a string with drops of water- the logo for SoCS

Standing and looking like an unemployed actor in the welfare line. Still waiting for the expresso machine to finish torturing me with its drama causes some reflection. How do I get that safe out of my backyard? Rolls across my consciousness. Having no immediate answer, the cup runneth over, and I sip quickly to keep the dark brew off the floor. Lips burning while crossing to the door to the back porch, my phone gives off the annoying twirp sound indicating yet another interloper at the front door. My thought goes to don’t ring the bell too late to stop the Hounds of Baskerville response by Twiggy and Lucy.

The security system needs a shutdown but first, a treat to the girls to soothe their savage breasts. Then, soothing done, the mechanical part of the disarm cycle is begun. The gate is opened, the bar lifted, machine guns on standby, boiling oil secured, concertina wire recoiled, claymore mines disabled, trebuchet locked, moat submarine fence dropped, bolts thrown, and locks undone.

The door opens to the likeness of Yosemite Sam. “Dadburn bureaucrats. Have no dadburn understanding of the need for dadburn beauty rest. Stupid tenderfoot woke me to ask if I was willing to open a safe house. A dadburn safe house in a safe. Well, I told him I was not in a position to give him an answer and then sent him packing with the thought of dancing the Charleston to the tune of my twin 45s. Here take this.”

Want to ask more questions, but Sam hands me two envelopes and goes around the house. The first is an offer to rent out the safe. It is signed by Alfred E Neumann, so it looks suspiciously like the CIA. The second is from Linda Hill. Here’s what it says. Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “me.” Find a word that starts with “me” or use the word “me” as the theme of your post. Have fun!

If you want fun, visit Linda’s blog and read how easy it is. Here is the link. https://lindaghill.com/2022/09/30/the-friday-reminder-and-prompt-for-socs-oct-1-2022/

Me by John W. Howell © 2022

“You didn’t complete the prompt.”

“I sure did.”

“I didn’t see ‘me’ in there anywhere.”

“See the word ‘mechanical?'”

“Oh, for heaven’s sake. How will anyone know you worked ‘me’ in that way?

“This is not a test. Folks are intelligent enough to catch stuff like that.”

“I didn’t catch the ‘me’ in mechanical.”

“Excuse me but did you not hear the word intelligent either?”

“Oh, cold brother. You hurt me.”

“Right. Since when do words hurt you.”

“I guess I’m a little tender. You have to be nice to me.”

“Let me guess. You are a half pint low on beer?”

“Now that you mention it. A cold brew would serve me well right now.”

“Can you wait for the pub?”

“You know me. I’m a paragon of patience. Call uber now.”

“On it. Any other words for me?”

“VooDoo Ranger stat.”

Today’s good news story comes from (where else) the Good News Network. Here it is in its entirety.

John Cena Smashes Guinness World Record – Granting 650 Wishes for Sick Children

American actor and WWE superstar John Cena has set a new record for the most wishes granted through the Make-A-Wish Foundation with 650.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation helps fulfill the wishes of children who have been diagnosed with a critical illness. As the most wished-for celebrity, nobody else has ever granted more than 200 wishes in the 42-year existence of Make-A-Wish.

Targeting children between the age of 2 and 18, they can choose to meet a celebrity, go to an event or even give a gift to someone else and were “thrilled” to honor Cena as the man who has fulfilled the most wishes.

“If you ever need me for this ever, I don’t care what I’m doing, I will drop what I’m doing and be involved because I think that’s the coolest thing,” Cena said in an interview after being honored for 500 wishes granted. “I just drop everything, [and] if I can offer a fantastic experience, I’ll be first in line to do my part.”

Cena began his career in professional wrestling in 1999 and has since become one of the most popular athletes of all time; he is a 16-time world champion in WWE.

A crowd favorite character and the face for WWE’s “Be a Star” anti-bullying campaign, he granted his first wish for the Foundation in 2002. In 2012, Cena granted Make-A-Wish’s 1000th wish to a fan named Cardon.

Once receiving the opportunity to meet Cena, children take photos and hang out with their favorite wrestler and sometimes even venture inside the ring.

Cena is usually accompanied by one of his championship belts: he has held the WWE Championship 13 separate times and often lets the kids try it on.

WATCH A look back at his 650 wishes, but keep a tissue handy!

The good news with this story is a person who has fame can bring joy to those who most need it. Bless you, John Cena. Today’s JohnKu talks about paying it forward. I hope you have a special weekend.

Thursday – A Little Personal – Twiggy and Lucy Solving a mystery

“Lucy. What the heck is cheeseburger doing in the yard?”

“I don’t know. Did you leave her out there last night?”

“No way. She’s not an outside toy. So I don’t know how she got there.”

“There has to be an answer. Cheeseburgers just don’t get up and walk outside.”

“Where you going?”

“I’m going to have a look. There might be a clue at the scene of the crime.”

“You been in Dad’s TBR again? What do you see at the so-called ‘scene of the crime?'”

“You gotta be careful. Don’t want to disturb any evidence.”

“Alright, Inspector Clouseau. What did you find out?”

“Looks like dad is on the patio. Hey dad. Know anything about this cheeseburger?”

“Yeah, I accidentally dropped it. I’ll pick it up on the way in.”

“Man, that was an anti-climax if I ever heard one.”

“Yeah, you would think maybe it would have been an alien carry-out or something. Hey, Mom.”

“Why are you calling Mom? Another mystery?

“Thinking about lunch and want to get my order in early.”

“You have been reading fiction, haven’t you?”

“A little, I guess.”

Test by john W. Howell © 2022

“Wow, look at this. Here we are in New York city.”

“Yes indeed. A perfect place for a test.”

“Test? What kind of test?”

“We are here for that quiz show, Right?”

“Yes but what test?”

“That show is all about being able to remember stuff.”

“Okay.”

“So I think it would be good to see how much of this street you can remember after we drive down it.”

“But the show is about history and songs and other things.”

“I think this will help stimulate your memory cells.”

“I don’t see it but I’ll humor you.”

“Okay I’ve taken a photo of the street. Tell me what you remember from the beginning to where we are right now.”

“There’s Brandy. There’s solar, wind, natural gas and oh yes, oil by British Petrolium. McDonalds at 46th and 7th. Discover card, TDK, Budweiser, NBC.”

“Okay that’s enough. You pass.”

“Aw come on. I was just getting warmed up.”

“Maybe you should save it for the show. Here I’ll send you the photo.”

“Oops.”

“Oops what?”

“I left my phone somewhere?”

“What do you mean ‘somewhere?'”

“It’s either at the hotel, the coffee shop, that little shop we went into, or still at home.”

“Do you remember the last time you had it.”

“I took some photos at grandma’s.”

“That was last Thanksgiving.”

“Maybe it’s at grandma’s”

“I guess as a memory sevant there are things that slip through the cracks.”

“Who are you by the way?”

“Oh my.”

“Just messin’ with ya. My phone’s right here.”
